Summer is finally upon us, and, as anyone can vouch, with summer comes ice cream. Each year, the residents of Connecticut visit the hundreds of ice cream stores that the state has to offer, picking from over one thousand flavors such as swirled raspberry cheesecake, cookies and cream, and sea salt caramel. Through our own trips and experiences, we have gathered and listed several of the tastiest ice cream shops in Fairfield County.
Milk Craft, Fairfield
Milk Craft is a personal favorite of mine, and, with its 4.1 star rating, it is a personal favorite of many others as well. This creamery serves frozen ice cream inside of Hong Kong bubble cones, a type of waffle. Customers typically chose up to three flavors, some of the most exquisite options being smores campfire and Vietnamese coffee. Available toppings include caramelized bananas, maple kettle corn, applewood smoked bacon, fire roasted marshmallows, and frosted flakes. The servers freeze each ice cream with liquid nitrogen in front of you, calling for a truly authentic experience.
Peachwave, Shelton
Although not ice cream, Peachwave’s frozen yogurt is some of the best out there. Upon arrival, customers are prompted to grab a cup and fill it up with the ample frozen yogurt flavors from multiple machines. While the flavors are simpler, like mango, cotton candy, and chocolate, they each have bold, vibrant tastes. Then, comes the fun part: toppings. Customers can choose from colorful tapioca pearls, chocolate-covered pretzels, sour gummy worms, fruit, brownies, skittles, and more. An additional bonus is that frozen yogurt is based from cultured milk rather than cream, resulting in less than one-fifth the amount of calories than there are in a serving of ice cream of the same size.
Plasko’s Farm and Creamery, Trumbull
This article would be incomplete without including Plasko’s. Plasko’s Creamery was established by Czechoslovakian immigrants in 1925, and it has its only location here in Trumbull, Connecticut. The creamery boasts freshly brewed coffee, homemade ice cream and shakes, and baked goods, as well as two donkeys and a corn maze that is active during the fall season. Customers especially enjoy Plasko’s apple cider donuts, Cookie Monster ice cream flavor, jumbo sized cookies, and friendly staff (many of whom are Trumbull High students!). Those looking for ice cream options in Trumbull should also consider Sunny Daes on White Plains Road.
Ferris Acres Farm and Creamery, Newtown
Last on the list is Ferris Acres Farm and Creamery, another small business located in Newtown, Connecticut. Similar to Plasko’s, this 4.8 star rated farm owns a plethora of Holstein cows and sells various flavors and styles of ice creams, sorbets, shakes, pies, and cakes. There are twenty-six regular ice cream flavors to choose from, including coconut chocolate chunk and grasshopper, a peppermint flavor with crushed oreos, as well as thirty special flavors that rotate on a daily basis. Vegan options are even made specially with oat milk. Additionally, the creamery is open year-round, selling pie and cheesecake in the fall and eggnog in the winter.
It is our hope that you try and enjoy these nearby ice cream shops. Happy summer!
