Being apart of the team means that you will do whatever it takes to obtain victory. Great players have come and gone, such as Keith Bond (Yale), Nick Weinstein (Bryant University), and many more notable athletes. Wearing the Trumbull soccer logo means that you are an elite player that is representing the school. Every year the soccer team puts on a show and never disappoints the loyal fans.

Dial forward to 2014 and the Trumbull High School Eagles (1-4-0) are in a hole with a tough beginning to their young season. With key players injured such as Matthew Kapell and Dan Isaac as well as Danny Bartoli getting a red card, this is not how Trumbull envisioned their season to play out. With an amazing win against Ridgefield, last years state champions; the Eagles started their season off on a high note. But due to injuries and fouls the team hasn’t been able to get into a groove. “With the great win against Ridgefield we started our season flying high. We played great and the student section really motivated us to get the victory.” Danny Bartoli said, “The last four games have all been close and have been heartbreaking losses. So we really need to come out hungry against a good Ludlowe team.”

On September 27 the Trumbull High School Boys soccer team (1-4-0) played against Fairfield Ludlowe High School (6-0-0) in a match that could be the turning point for the Trumbull. With Trumbull starting off cold they really need this one to get their season back in motion. Their goal is to make the Fciac’s and state tournaments, which means they need some key wins. The weather was picture-perfect and the grass field was cut to perfection. As the game started both teams brought physicality as well as energy. But Trumbull wasn’t just playing for the win they were also playing for Dan Russo’s mother who has ovarian cancer. Every player on the team was wearing blue wristbands to give them the motivation to win as well as spread awareness about this horrible disease. In the 39th minutes Matt Restrepo drew a foul in the box, which gave Trumbull a penalty shot vs. Ludlowe’s goalie. Taking the shot Dan Russo sunk the kick in the bottom left corner of the goal and gave Trumbull the lead at half 1-0. The fan section erupted as if it was a volcano and started chanting, “RUSSO…RUSSO…RUSSO!” This is exactly what Trumbull needed to get their season back and them pumped up for the second half.

As the second half started Trumbull knew that Ludlowe would not go away that easily. Ludlowe scored right away with a header and their energy was at an all time high. Mid way through the second half Ludlowe scored again off an amazing bicycle kick by the forward. Ludlowe was now in control with the game clock winding down. Although down 2-1 in the 79th minute Trumbull fought back and got a deflection goal by Paul Costa. The team went crazy and gave him high fives and chest bumps. “To make that goal was huge for us because we really needed to get this tie. Also I’m happy we were able to do it for Dan Russo’s mom who is fighting hard against cancer” Paul Costa said. This season is going to be special for the Eagles and their fight back to the top of the pack. With a record of 1-4-1 and less than half the season over Trumbull is going to have to work hard to get to their goals of Fciac’s and State Tournaments.

Jason Micalizzi ‘15 EE Contributor Trumbull High School soccer has always been about tradition and winning.
