The only thing more exhilarating than watching over 100 runners run across an open field at the start of a race is being a part of this intense sprint.
\nOn Monday October 20th, the Girls Cross Country team placed 6th at the FCIAC championship meet held at Waveny Park in New Canaan.\u00a0After finishing the regular season with a record of 11-7, the team of 45 girls persevered through the 4k course and accomplished all of the goals they had set for themselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal going into FCIACS was to defeat two teams that had previously defeated us as well as beat all the teams we had beaten during the regular season,\u201d explains coach Jim McCaffrey. \u201cWe set out and we did just that by beating Fairfield Ludlowe and New Canaan.\u201d<\/p>\n
Captain Julia Provenzano was essential to achieving the team\u2019s goal. Provenzano finished the race in 15:39, winning a medal for 16th place. As a senior, Provenzano knew she had to make the best out of her final FCIAC championship.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore the race, I was a little nervous because my shin was hurting and I didn\u2019t know how that would affect my time,\u201d she explains. \u201cAfter my leg was taped up and ready I refused to let the pain affect me. I thought about how badly I wanted to break a 6:30 [minutes per mile] pace. Approaching the starting line and during the race, there was only one thing in my mind- go.<\/p>\n
\u201cI dug deep to cross the finish line strong. Looking at my results, I couldn\u2019t believe my mile pace- 6:18. At that moment, I felt invincible.\u201d
\nSophomore Katelynn Romanchick, the number one runner for the Eagles, finished the race in 15:22, winning 13th place, a medal, and a shirt displaying her All-FCIAC place in the top 15.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe only goal I made before the race was to run my fastest pace and I did. Once the race had started, I thought about breathing and not slowing down,\u201d says Romanchick as she looks back at her race. \u201cI couldn\u2019t think about anything else like finishing the race because that would have taken me out of a race mindset and messed up my running.\u201d<\/p>\n
Throughout the regular season, Romanchick and Provenzano helped lead the team to victory over the Western Division, which consisted of Greenwich, Danbury, Stamford, Westhill, and Central. At the FCIAC meet, along with the medals that Romanchick and Provenzano won, the team won a trophy congratulating them on their title.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think our division was a giant step forward for our program,\u201d says McCaffrey. \u201cOver the last three years, we\u2019ve gotten better and better.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
