The spinoff series was released February 26th on Netflix, and has brought back cherished memories from the 1980s and 1990s for its audience and its cast.

A brainchild of John Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse, the new show echoed the premise of the old. Full House began with recent widower Danny Tanner moving in with his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis and his goofy best friend Joey Gladstone to raise his three young daughters. Fuller House picks up 29 years later with eldest daughter DJ Fuller, her sister Stephanie, and her quirky best friend Kimmy Gibbler moving back into the Tanner’s childhood home to raise DJ’s three sons and Kimmy’s daughter after the death of DJ’s firefighter husband.

All the original cast members returned for at least one episode as guest stars except Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played littlest sister Michelle. The show made several jokes about Michelle’s absence, including one in the pilot about Michelle growing her fashion empire in New York, the real-life ambition of the Olsens, followed by a 30-second deadpan into the camera, and another joke mid-season about the price of Mary Kate and Ashley’s clothing line, Elizabeth and James, saying it was no wonder they no longer needed to act given what they were charging.

All the same, these jokes were light-hearted, as those who returned understood the timing was poor for the girls’ fashion career. Ashley also said she wouldn’t feel comfortable returning to the screen after a 12-year hiatus from acting. Dave Coulier, who plays Joey, also explained that since the Olsens were so young when the show was on it was understandable they wouldn’t feel the same nostalgia as other cast members, most of whom never had a role as significant as on Full House.

Still, the reunion of the Tanners and their clan was bittersweet for audiences, especially given the way the girls had grown up. Both DJ (Candace Cameron Bure) and Kimmy (Andrea Barber) are stuck-in-the-90s soccer moms, while Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), who was only five in the original’s first season, has become a partying DJ (in fact, she steals the name “DJ Tanner” from her sister). Nevertheless, many of the show’s most precious moments were brought back, with the studio audience applauding upon the utterance of catchphrases like Joey’s “Cut it out!,” Jesse’s “Have Mercy!,” and Stephanie’s “How Rude!”

While the pilot opened with a clip of the original theme song, Carly Rae Jepsen recorded an updated version of “Everywhere you Look” for the rest of the season, introducing the new actors who were to play DJ and Kimmy’s kids as well as the other season regulars (DJ, Kimmy, and Stephanie). John Stamos, Dave Coulier, Bob Saget, Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky, Scott Weinger, who played DJ’s high school boyfriend Steve, and Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit, who played Nicky and Alex Katsopolis, all returned for at least one episode, with Aunt Becky and Danny starring on a new TV news show in L.A., Joey living in Vegas, and Jesse starting a new business. The twins were still in college after 6 years, but were planning to move on to a taco truck business, provided that their parents bought the truck and the tacos.

While the show received generally poor reviews from critics, most fans were delighted by their old favorites returning, and the show made good use of its modern setting to make jokes like DJ’s son knowing “all the bad words”– one among them being “Donald Trump.” The first season, which became available all at once on Netflix, ended in a cliffhanger, so the show’s renewal for a second season should relieve audiences left hanging with DJ caught between two men. Yet regardless of the outcome, many fans were just glad to have their childhood memories brought back to life.

Rachel Tropp ’16 EE Editor-in-Chief Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, you’ll probably see a meme or screen cap of Fuller House.
