Coaches Laura Santelli and Vanessa Pardo were appointed after Mr. Breslow retired last year. Though they may have been new, the coaches brought immediate success to the team, which reached states for the first time in three years. Both brought solid credentials to the table.

Coach Pardo is a former player, who was a top 5 junior in all of France. She said, “ I was selected at 12 years old to leave home and trained rigorously with the French Federation for the next 6 years.” This propelled her to be approached by several D1 universities, and she ended up playing number one singles for Virginia Polytechnic. During her time there, the
university won the Atlantic 10 tournament 4 times.

Coach Santelli possesses great coaching and leadership skills. She is a USTA player, and also works with Boy Scouts. Furthermore, she is a ski coach, a French teacher, and a mother to teenagers.

Both coaches have a very clear idea of what they want to achieve with the team and with the players this year. Coach Pardo said, “Although I do have my own goal as a coach,” she said, “ I always incorporate my team’s opinion to formulate our goals. I want each player who will be representing the team to gain something that they did not have when entering the season, grow as a tennis player, gain overall experience as an individual.”

Coach Santelli expressed similar views. She hopes to teach her players, how to be part of a team, how to succeed, and to deal with wins and losses. She was very pleased by the fact that “the team really came together and the spirit of the team was very developed, and each player grew in their own way.”

The players of the team have one more thing to look forward to after the end of this year’s season: Coach Santelli revealed that the town approved funding to put down new courts for next year. With new courts, new coaches, and new players, the tennis team is poised for many victories in the future.

Lalith Gannavaram ’18 EE Staff Writer Spring sports season is upon us and the boys tennis team will be training under the eyes of a relatively new pair of coaches.
