The November closings and cancellations have got all of Trumbull wondering: What is next?

Hurricane Irene took the town by surprise when over 90% of residents and businesses were without power. The outages had the town in utter darkness, which meant that school was closed from Monday, October 29th to Friday, November 2nd. Upon the hectic return back to school on Monday, November 5th, many were still without power and gossip of a snowstorm quickly permeated throughout the hallways of THS. Teachers and students were reluctant to believe it.

Mr. Manuel said, “I was hoping it would turn out to be just a couple inches of rain. We had a lot to catch up on in class.” However, many Trumbull residents were in shock Tuesday night when the town was covered by a white blanket of snow in what seemed like the blink of an eye.

The next morning there were mixed feelings among students who anxiously watched the school closing lists until the words appeared: Trumbull Public Schools: Closed.

“I was disappointed because it was class theme day and our spirit week had already been cut short with Election Day,” said senior Jenna Vietze.

Junior Hannah Winnacott added, “I didn’t want all of the school days off because now were going to be in school until late June.”

Though many were dissatisfied with the recent school closings, others such as senior Cristen Yakush embraced it. “I’d rather have the days off now to get college work done, because by the end of the year when days are added on, I won’t be as worried about my grades.” Like Cristen said, for some seniors, the days off may have been beneficial.

The week off and the snow day led Trumbull Public Schools to push back the last day of school from June 13th to June 21st. This means that any additional snow day will be taken away from February Break.

While some may view “No School November” as simply speeding up the time until Christmas break, others may view it as a series of unfortunate events shortening summer vacation and fast forwarding senior year. Whichever way you see it, there’s no doubt that this school year as taken some unexpected turns. Student must now wonder what December will bring.

By Kylie Rotanelli ‘13 EE Staff Writer Hurricanes, power outages, the second cancellation of Halloween, and sneak attack snowstorms.
