Comey had served as FBI Director since September of 2013. For one, the President was not pleased with the way the situation with Hillary Clinton’s compromised emails was handled, being one reason for his firing. This sudden dismissal of Comey from his head FBI position also effectively ended all investigations involving ties with President Trump and whether or not his campaign had involvement with the Russian government or other Russian nationals to change the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election.

In a message to Comey, President Trump stated, “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.” The growing tensions between the investigation revolving around Russia’s interference and President Trump’s assertions about Russia’s noninvolvement clearly heated up into the ultimate action taken by the President last Tuesday.

Trinhan Le states, “I believe that Trump’s firing of Comey was justifiable. It was necessary as it was similar to Nixon’s firing of Cox during the Watergate scandal. Comey’s judgement was questionable and it is this that ruined the reputation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I believe that Trump will nominate a new leader into this position who will execute his duties as director of the FBI in a much more professional manner.”

Comey responded recently by publicly saying that he “most definitely” would like to testify before Congress with regards to his dismissal. Comey’s speaking out has effectively led to more officials encouraging his speaking out, and has even led some more Congressional Republicans to criticize Trump’s Presidency in the White House.

The President’s response to this situation was quite unexpected. Last week, President Trump scrutinizingly informed two Russian officials that he had fired “nut job” James Comey. Trump stated, “”I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary, supports the decision. He says that Comey’s way of “grandstanding and politicizing” had slowed down and threatened to sever any political or diplomatic progress that was being made with the United States and Moscow, and that this dismissal of Comey was necessary for any collaboration to be made with the Russian Federation in the future.

“The President has always emphasized the importance of making deals with Russia as it relates to Syria, Ukraine, defeating ISIS and other key issues for the benefit and safety of the American people” asserts Spicer. In the grand scheme of things, the President may not have handled the situation all too well, but the statement by Spicer holds true, as the United States does need its Russian ally to fight the many hindrances that have plagued our world today.

“I think that Trump’s firing of Comey was not a smart move”, according to Sophomore Luke Feretti. ” While Comey was not a superb leader, and did not do a great job as the director of the FBI, I don’t believe Trump seeks to replace him due to inability. I think that Trump fired Comey because Comey was conducting investigations into something that could hurt Trump’s reputation, and Trump fired Comey to protect anything that Trump did not want uncovered or brought to the public’s attention.”

Despite the heat, the issue has not been completely settled, so the public will have to see where the issue with the FBI Director and the newly elected President Trump leads the United States.

Manan Manchanda ‘19 EE Co-News Editor Last week, President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.
