Accompanied by their advisors – Ms. Boland, Ms. Kremzar, and Mr. Margonis – 27 students spent their time in the City of Brotherly Love having calls with BICEN alumni turned lawyers, embarking on a Constitutional scavenger hunt, and visiting some historical sites along the way as the prepare for the national competition at the end of the month.

Lawrence Zhang, a member of Unit 5, found the trip to be very useful in terms of getting focused for Nationals. He relates, “After our victory at the State Competition, the class got to take it easy for about a month while we waited for the new round of questions to come out. It is no secret that getting back into the swing of things has been difficult, however, this trip definitely put my unit right back on track.”

On Friday, students spent their afternoon running around the streets of Philadelphia in search of historical landmarks. The advisors teamed up to create a set of 13 clues which lead students to different sites in the city, ranging from Betsy Ross’s house to Independence Hall. However, the weather took a turn for the worse around 2 PM, as a torrential downpour rained down on the students. While some Units decided to call it quits before the time limit was up, other groups pushed through the elements in search of victory. Unit 2, consisting of Samantha Almonacid, Danielle Cross, Lalith Gannavaram, and Joseph Guedes came out on top. They managed to complete 10 out of 13 tasks faster than any other unit, earning bragging rights for the rest of the trip.

Over the course of the weekend, students were given the opportunity to explore multiple museums as well as the the National Constitution Center. They were advised to search for historical examples relating specifically to their area of study.

Gillian Kick, a member of Unit 4, found the National Constitution Center to be incredibly helpful in providing unique perspectives to some of her Unit’s fundamental topics.
