According to DECA founders, DECA is an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in career clusters of finance, hospitality, marketing, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

The state competition consists of participating public high schools within the state. The students are able to choose which category they would like to compete in. From accounting to retail merchandising, the options vary so students can have a topic that interests them. Within each category, the students can choose if they want to have an individual or a team (two people) decision making event. Regardless of which option they choose, the students are given a case study specific to their business category. They are given thirty minutes to read over the case study and prepare a presentation given to judges who are professionals in the industry.

Ms. Rusate, the club advisor for the past three years, said, “It is really rewarding to see the students apply what they are learning in school and have success.” Ms. Rusate said that it is an honor to be bringing nine students to nationals in April.

Sophie Leeds, who won first place in the Entrepreneurship event, said, “DECA gives you a taste of what the business world is really like.” Leeds believes that her experience with DECA will help her in the future.

There are two ways to secure a spot at nationals. The typical way is to be in the top three for their category. The judges will give each individual or team a score using a rubric based on the industry validated performance indicators. The students with the highest scores will earn recognition at the awards dinner hosted after all presentations are finished. The second way is to develop the several chapter campaigns each DECA club must have: membership, promotional, and community service. Schools are also given recognition for achieving these accolades.

“At the competition, Trumbull High School was recognized for growing the membership of our club by twenty people and our promotional campaign,” Ms. Rusate said. The promotional campaign consists of three outreach activities, three community outreach activities, and sharing three alumni success stories. One activity was cleaning the trail behind the THS tennis courts.

Students prepare for the competition since September. There were two “Dine with Deca” events set up at both Chipotle and Panera. DECA students were also stationed outside of Stop & Shop for four hours looking for donations.
