THS Model Congress in Philadelphia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A group of Trumbull High School students recently participated in the University of Pennsylvania\u00a0<\/span>Model Congress competition and their exceptional performance brought home several top\u00a0<\/span>honors.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Model Congress competition simulates the legislative process of the United States\u00a0<\/span>government, where high school students from across the country gather to debate and create\u00a0<\/span>solutions to important national issues. This year’s event was held at the University of\u00a0<\/span>Pennsylvania, attracting hundreds of students from all over the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the largest model congress competition Trumbull High has attended since COVID, but\u00a0<\/span>the school was lucky to be represented by a group of 21 talented students, who excelled in their\u00a0<\/span>respective committees and were recognized for their outstanding performances. The students\u00a0<\/span>tackled a variety of issues, ranging from healthcare reform to environmental sustainability. Two\u00a0<\/span>students even received awards for their talent, the most at a national conference for the past\u00a0<\/span>two years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Junior student Thomas Ou was awarded the Best Delegate in his committee, which focused on\u00a0<\/span>educational reforms. \u201cMy experiences being in a special education program for non-native\u00a0<\/span>speakers and as a tutor for high school students really shone through in this committee,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>commented Ou. \u201cI had so much to say about our education system\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ou\u2019s extensive research and passionate arguments helped him stand out among the other\u00a0<\/span>participants. When asked about the award, he said, \u201cI think I leapt 3 feet in the air when I found\u00a0<\/span>out. This year\u2019s competitors were especially tough and I am incredibly grateful and proud to\u00a0<\/span>have received this honor\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another Trumbull High School student, senior Nick Valyayev, received an Honorable Mention for\u00a0<\/span>his work in the Judiciary. He was recognized for his eloquent speeches and well-researched\u00a0<\/span>proposals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI got insight into how Moot Court functions, which is incredibly valuable since it\u2019s an activity that\u00a0<\/span>I want to do in college,\u201d said Valyayev, \u201cBy the end of it, I felt like an actual lawyer going before\u00a0<\/span>the bench. The people in SCOTUS were also incredibly nice, and I would encourage others in\u00a0<\/span>ModCon who are interested to apply to SCOTUS whenever they have the chance\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both of these participants were first year model congress competitors, only recently joining\u00a0<\/span>earlier this year. The club’s officers encourage more students to try out the competition, stating\u00a0<\/span>that they may be pleasantly surprised by the results.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Ou, Model Congress is the perfect club for any aspiring lawyer and\/or political science\u00a0<\/span>student.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAttending this conference is an incredible opportunity to engage in meaningful\u00a0<\/span>debates, learn about national issues, and develop crucial skills such as public speaking and\u00a0<\/span>negotiation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt’s an experience that not only broadens your horizons but also prepares\u00a0<\/span>you for a future in leadership and decision-making\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The success of the Trumbull High School Model Congress team at the University of\u00a0<\/span>Pennsylvania event is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students, teachers,\u00a0<\/span>and administrators. The team’s achievements demonstrated the high caliber of education and\u00a0<\/span>extracurricular opportunities available at Trumbull High School.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
