Characters can be customized and the world is typically created by the “dungeon master” (main game organizer), the rule maker, and the narrator. Decisions based on dice rolls keep the game entertaining for all, whether new or experienced.

Before becoming Dungeon Master, Ava Schuerlein was a member of the club. Originally influenced to join from videos she had seen of the game online, Ava’s passion for the activity has grown and evolved. Similar to any sort of tightly-knit community such as sport teams, shared interests and experiences can bring people together and encourage personal development, and Ava has felt this effect herself.

“I used to be very reserved and shy, and, in some situations, I still am”, recalls Schuerlein. “But the club taught me that throwing ideas out to a group of people can be helpful since every voice counts.”

Her experience and passion for creating a supportive and encouraging environment, which she felt last year, drove her to take the lead within the club for this upcoming year. When asked what her overall goal for the club would be, she responded “…to help people learn how to communicate with others to make plans… everybody to be friends with each other, for people who had no idea what each other’s names were to be laughing and talking together outside of school.”

While passionate about creating a supportive environment, Ava is also committed to creating two unforgettable campaigns. As Dungeon Master, she must create a campaign that appeals to all, must be flexible, able improvise on the spot, collaborate and lead others, and stick to the events necessary while allowing for the story to unfold in a natural way.

She works everyday to ensure this, but it is a process that comes easily to her. Naturally a creative person, she enjoys brainstorming, exploring different inspirations, and perfecting her own creations. She cites her current inspirations to be the video games Bloodborne, Lies of P, and Faith: The Unholy Trinity.

Intrigued by how the club would begin to unfold, I attended the recent meeting on October 18. The class was full of people; the excitement for this club is tangible. It is clear to me that this club is a paradigm of the power of a shared passion bringing people together. Those in attendance, a majority with no previous connection, filled the class and began to bond. Students felt free to crack jokes and laughter filled the room. I have no doubt that this club will prosper and have fun.

As a final note, Ava thanks Mr. Biegen as the incredible experience of the Dungeons & Dragons Club would not be possible without him. She says that because of him, students are able to express their true selves, feel comfortable, and can grow.

Ava Schuerlein and Mr. Biegen encourage anyone who may be interested in the club to stop by for a session at M26 on Wednesdays.
