Sha Battle is one lady who’s definitely holding it down in the ring. As a tech consultant and businesswoman, Battle frequently thought that education undervalued the variety of contributions made by Black women. (After all, did you know that a Black lady designed the first home security system?) Consequently, the native Georgian started a campaign to mark April as International Black Women’s History Month.

Battle found a method to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of Black and minority women throughout the diaspora, particularly those that aren’t typically taught in schools, conveniently coinciding with Black and Women’s History Month. The Atlanta citizen made history in April 2016 and was commended by the city of Atlanta for recognizing Black Women’s History Month.

Battle believed that Women’s History Month in March and Black History Month in February weren’t sufficient to honor the achievements of Black women, and to be honest? Some points were raised. Because Black women face several forms of marginalization at the same time, it is important that we observe International Black Women’s History Month in all of our digital spaces, offices, and classrooms across the country. Black women’s marginalization within the Black community and mainstream “white” feminism cannot be generalized, just as Black people’s experiences differ from those of people of color. Numerous concepts, such as misogynoir, womanism, and even triple consciousness, can be used to explain this intersectionality.

The digital advisor from Atlanta, who works with Bauce Magazine, stated in an interview that she didn’t think Black History Month did enough to honor the achievements that black women have made to global history. “Many of our contributions have never been acknowledged. I knew that March was Women’s History Month and, while I am so happy about that, I felt like [Black women] needed our own month to celebrate the contributions that we as a culture have made to world history.”

Throughout the month of commemoration, we are encouraged to celebrate the rich history of Black women and all women of the African/Black Diaspora, acknowledge and appreciate their accomplishments, and foster understanding and awareness.
