It seems whenever you want to see an artist live you have to go through a grueling, competitive, and time consuming process to even get a single seat inside of a venue. On top of this, ticket prices are becoming outlandish. According to The New York Times, the average ticket cost is $135.92 at face value. Compared to 40 or 50 years ago it is unusually high. The average ticket price at an Elvis Presley concert in the 1950s was $17 dollars in today’s prices. But why is this? And how is the price gouging of concert tickets affecting our youth today?

Concert tickets are usually purchased through Ticketmaster since most artists use this site for face value ticket sales. But it is clear that Ticketmaster is using unfair tactics to sell tickets at unreasonable prices. Ticketmaster has Dynamic pricing which is defined as “the strategy of adjusting prices in real time in response to market forces like supply and demand, cost fluctuation, competitor pricing, and consumer buying behavior”, according to pricefx.com.

This sounds great. But this most likely will affect the buyer in a negative way. Dynamic pricing increase the prices of tickets and so do the ticket resellers. Dynamic pricing has many issues with the way that it works. For starters, prices fluctuate during an event. This means that a ticket you find can increase its price and become much more expensive. Often called a “price hike”, this leaves lots of customers angry and tarnishes the artist’s brand. Dynamic pricing is designed to be used as a way to benefit the artist and the consumer but ultimately has been shown to benefit the artist more.

In addition to dynamic pricing cheating out customers of fair deals, ticket resellers are becoming a bigger issue by the day. In fact the U.S. Is currently in the process of undergoing a legal battle with Ticketmaster over resellers.

Resellers are individuals who engage in reselling tickets over the internet after buying them. They are largely responsible for the rising prices of concert tickets. Here’s why: An article in The New York Times states that “(t)he entertainment giant Live Nation had broken the law by allowing brokers to buy up millions of dollars of tickets and resell them at higher prices,” according to he Federal Trade Commision’s lawsuit against Ticketmaster.

Resellers are currently in control of 80% of primary ticketing sales at larger venues. This means that almost 80% of those buying tickets from Ticketmaster are brokers. Retailers who purchase thousands of tickets and sell them for an increased amount are profiting greatly from the exploitation of ticket consumers. In fact “the secondary ticket market size” is projected to reach $6.56 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 9.7%”, according to Straitsresearch.com. These ways of ticket gouging are directly affecting the younger generation from seeing artists they want to see live.

Concerts are in fact an important and fun way for today’s youth to create a shared human experience, providing them with a strong emotional experience that they can look back on forever. Concerts can also give kids and teens motivation, appreciation for creativity and art, and a sense of curiosity. But because of the current climate of ticket sales, it becomes harder and harder for youth to see an artist live. For a multitude of reasons, that relates back to the increased prices of concert tickets.

It has become almost a luxury to afford concert tickets to mainstream artists. Price gouging is stripping away the opportunity for people to see these artists, taking away experiences they can look back on in fondness and the motivator that gets them through struggles they may face.

Nathaniel Angus ’28 EE Staff Writer “Ticketmaster War” is the term invented by Gen Z that conveys how hard it is these days to get tickets.
