Yeah, Superman, I said it. A house built upon bricks of villains, heroes, and comically absurd plots to destroy the world. Yet, when the villains of the DC Universe attempt treacherous plans, the world relies on one man to save them all. The Dark Knight, The Caped Crusader, The World’s Greatest Detective, of course, I’m talking about Batman!!

The peak of mental and physical perfection, Batman routinely fights gods in movies and comics and wins consistently. Ironic that the greatest superhero of all time would be the one normal dude without superpowers.

Across 70 years of brooding and crime-fighting, we have seen a menagerie of different iterations of Batman, from the comic and quirky Adam West, to the mystical and intelligent Michael Keaton, to the enigmatic and ferocious Christian Bale. Each of these takes offers a unique perspective on the story of the tragedy and triumph of Bruce Wayne. Still, one stands above the rest as the most emotional, most well-made, and the single most awesome version of Batman there is…Will Arnett’s Lego Batman Movie.

Now some might laugh at this take, but before you do, let me make one thing perfectly clear: The Lego Batman Movie is far more than just a comedic parody. It is 105 minutes of pure Dark Knight magic, complete with exceptionally well-written dialogue, memorable moments, and even CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!

However, before I get into the 5,678,483 good ideas (all from Batman) that went into this movie, we first need to understand how Lego Batman came to be. Introduced in The Lego Movie Universe, Batman instantly turned into a fan favorite due to Will Arnett’s over-the-top satirical performance and his character’s endless comedic and epic moments. This popularity encouraged demand for a Lego Batman solo movie, and 3 years later in 2017, our prayers were answered with the masterpiece that is The LEGO Batman Movie.

To understand what makes this movie special, we have to start with the most basic things and work our way up. First and foremost, the movie is an absolute love letter to every iteration of Batman. It breaks the fourth wall constantly and includes so many different references and nuances across the film for devoted Batman fans to catch.

Next, the comedy is absolutely fantastic. Not only is Will Arnett phenomenal, but the constant chaotic nature of the film, mixed in with jokes made possible by animation, creates an entertaining experience that keeps you on the verge of laughter the entire film.

Third, the action sequences are epic. It’s no secret that animation allows for creative liberties and action sequences to be expanded far beyond live-action. This movie is no exception, it’s able to portray Batman at the absolute peak of his fighting skill and combat as a 30-year-old dude dressed as a bat kicking the butt of 1,000 different super-villains at once.

Another major thing is that they absolutely nailed the dynamic between Batman and Joker while simultaneously poking fun at it. Batman and Joker are universally known in comics as the greatest Super Hero-Super Villain duo of all time. Joker is as essential to Batman’s character as Batman is to his, and the movie would not have been nearly as good if it were not for their comedic, almost romantic type relationship and Zach Galifianakis ‘ emotional voice-over of Joker.

Finally, and most importantly, it is one of the only Batman movies that actually shows Batman completing a full emotional arc. Despite the satire of Batman’s isolated and incredibly lonely lifestyle, it actually works really well for portraying Batman’s real inner struggles with being so closed off from the world and affected by tragedy. The film not only masterfully portrays his struggle to open up while pushing his loved ones away, but it also shows him finally opening himself up to other people and having a family.

It may seem surprising, but no Batman movie has ever executed an arc like this, especially not to this level of effectiveness. Overall, The Lego Batman movie not only remains a heartfelt love letter to Batman with some of the most entertaining and simultaneously hilarious moments you’ll see in a superhero film, it also portrays him to his most genuine and real extent in a way that works with the satirical tone of the movie. It’s an absolute ten out of ten for me and remains the best Batman movie behind only The Dark Knight and The Batman.

Oh, and before I end it here, THIS MOVIE IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING SUPERMAN HAS EVER BEEN IN. Yeah, what Superman! Come at me, bro. Batman isn’t scared of you.

Jude Magnotti ‘26 EE Editor-In-Chief The house that Batman built.
