Both options give a break from the normal routine, but students often have strong opinions about which one is better. Snow days feel exciting and unexpected, while delays give extra sleep without losing a whole day of school. This makes the debate pretty common every winter.

Many students prefer snow days because they feel like a real break. A snow day means no classes, no homework due that morning, and a chance to relax or go outside and enjoy the snow. It gives students a full day to reset, catch up on sleep, or spend time with friends and family. Snow days also feel special because they don’t happen very often throughout the school year, so students enjoy the surprise. For example, Tessa Gabriel in 9th grade attending Trumbull High School prefers snow days because she gets time to catch up on lots of work and study for upcoming tests.

Other students prefer delayed openings because they still get a shorter school day without having to make up the time later. A delay gives students a few extra hours to sleep in, get ready slowly, or finish homework they didn’t complete. It also keeps the school year on track, which some students like because it avoids extending the year into summer. Delays feel like a small break without the stress of losing a full day of learning. Another example, Ava Farmer in 9th grade also attending Trumbull High School prefers delays so we can get more sleep and have more time to enjoy summer.

Overall, students have different opinions but many lean toward snow days because they feel more fun and give a bigger break from school. Delays are helpful too, especially for students who want extra sleep without falling behind. Whether it’s a full day off or just a late start, winter schedule changes always bring excitement to the school year.

Brie Arsenault ’29 EE Staff Writer When winter comes around, students start hoping for schedule changes like snow days or delayed openings.
