For starters, anyone that has one is going to try to get it changed to an early release. Anyone with a car is essentially guaranteed to not be there. The only people that remain are anxiety-ridden teenagers trying to get their work done or the poor souls who don’t have the fortune of driving a car. However, in our school, period 8 study hall has turned into something much more entertaining than simply a normal study hall.

As the second semester commenced, busy Senior Ali Hassan was ecstatic to finally have the occasional study hall that happened to be in Period 8. However, he was not there to do work. He was there to play ping pong.

The idea of playing ping pong in school may seem like a frivolous notion. Afterall, you need a table, paddles, a ball, and enough space to keep yourself from chopping someone’s head off. Not to mention, people aren’t exactly fond of the sound of a ball constantly going back and forth as it constantly goes awry off the table. Fortunately, once you have paddles in a ball, then part gets pretty easy.

One day, Ali brought in his own mobile ping pong set equipped with a net, paddles, and a ball to play essentially anywhere and everywhere. Soon enough, the bug caught on. People were playing in lunch, afterschool and spending an entire period procrastinating on work to participate in one of the world’s most niche yet entertaining sports. Soon, it became not only students, but teachers getting caught up in the whirlwind as the resident study hall advisor Mr. Hayer soon inserted himself in the fray.

However, it did not end there. Soon enough the narrow tables of the senior lounge were no longer enough to feed period 8’s desire for ping pong. In accordance with Mr. Discala, period 8 managed to get a full sized ping pong table almost daily to play on.

Simple matches were no longer enough, the trend had to become competitive. Soon, brackets were being made, rivalries were being formed, and even friendly bets were being placed. Almost every day this semester, the period 8 ping pong club brought fun and friendly competition to what was once one of the most boring times of the day. So, if you have an early release, you might just want to consider staying a little longer to join the exciting competition of students and teachers alike that is now the period 8 ping pong club…

Jude Magnotti ‘26 EE Editor-In-Chief Period 8 Study halls are oftentimes one of the most boring periods of the day.
