National Nurses month is observed every May across the nation to recognize the impacts of nurses in our communities. It is a month dedicated to recognizing the nurses that show up for their patients and support them throughout their most life-changing events. Organizations, hospitals, and families all come together to show extra appreciation for the nurses that play these essential roles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nurses are seen as foundational to the healthcare industry. Not only do they monitor health conditions, provide treatment, and help deliver care, they directly support their patients and families, by educating and providing mental support. Nurses are quick-thinking and show compassion for their patients during difficult times. National Nurses Month strives to recognize the dedication of these nurses and their contributions to the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Nurses Month we know today grew from National Nurses Week, as the celebration was expanded, after the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic to include more time for recognition. During the impactful pandemic, countless nurses risked their lives to care for the victims of this new virus, and more people began to finally realize the essential contributions that nurses make to the medical field.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nurses Week used to be from May 6 to May 12. May 12 marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the woman who is credited with the founding of modern nursing. She went to nursing school, despite her family’s objections, and went on to treat patients of war. She wrote her own nursing textbook and focused on improving nursing, including new hygiene practices, many of which are still used today. She never stopped learning and teaching, as her legacy lives on today.<\/span><\/p>\n

While many think of nurses in a hospital, it is imperative to recognize the nurses that play significant roles at Trumbull High School. May 6 marks the day of National School Nurse Day, as it kicks off the week. School nurses are support systems for students and care for numerous students every day. They promote overall student welfare and boost success.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important to celebrate our nurses, especially during this month. Many organizations, hospitals, and communities arrange appreciation events and celebrations to thank nurses for the vital roles that they play. On the individual level, a thank you note or message goes a long way to appreciate the nurses in our communities. This month is an opportunity to give back to the nurses to do so much for us.<\/span><\/p>\n
