The eye-catching fidgets go by the name “NeeDohs”. The rubber casing filled with a sugar gel may be addicting to squish and squeeze, but is it really the most ethical choice for focus in school?

NeeDohs provide many different positives towards today’s adolescents like focus, entertainment, and stress relief. Needohs seem to give the effect of focus mainly targeting individuals with disorders including, but not limited to, ADHD, OCD, or Autism. For most, they tame restlessness and improve concentration when their hands engage in the kneading. For others, they are simply used for entertainment, as they enjoy how their fingers sink into the gel and the satisfying texture. They allow you to play with something while it’s discreet and non-distracting to others. Needohs are also meant for stress relief, and anxiety relief. The Needoh will act as a grounding technique to self soothe someone when the world feels too overwhelming.

These positives seem so great, there shouldn’t be many negatives about them. What could be wrong about this fiasco? They relieve anxiety, help us concentrate on tasks, and make people happy. There have been tons of trends, many of them bad, what would make this one bad?

We might be focused because of them, but in reality they’re distracting us from what’s happening because of them. These little toys are great and captivate us once we get a hold of them. This craze has caused stores to have to put customers on waiting lists that can span out for months, and has put increased pressure on agriculture and our earth that we are oblivious to. People are overlooking the point of these fidgets, and solely buying them for the trend. This tendency is seen as overconsumption as the CEO of Schylling stated they have sold a year’s worth supply in 9 weeks.

The pressure of overproduction has begun to have negative effects on agriculture and earthly resources. For example, production for the gel alone uses massive amounts of freshwater and thermal energy to refine the syrup, causing it to have a huge carbon footprint.

Needohs are great, they are extremely satisfying and useful in many ways. There are certainly reasons why they are so popular. But these reasons are abused as well. They are clearly well loved by many, which is amazing for the company and those who need them. However, people need to be considerate and aware that they should be used for the right reasons. Lining up at stores at 6am to buy out an entire month’s worth of stock is not one of them, just because they are trending. Simply buying one because you need one to focus is one. There is nothing wrong with wanting a squishy, satisfying fidget to have in your daily life.
