As Memorial Day weekend arrived, Trumbull High Students\u00a0 took time to relax and wind down from the hectic month of AP Exams and Finals prep, spend time with family and friends, and reflect on the meaning behind the holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Memorial Day, traditionally celebrated on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed forces. While many students of course looked forward to the extra day off from school, as well as the extra couple hours of sleep, many are also able to recognize the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice that led to the iconic Memorial Day!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although we weren\u2019t able to enjoy the warm, summer-like weather we would have wished for, the rain definitely didn\u2019t stop Trumbull High Students from making the most out of their weekend! Many students spent the holiday weekend participating in traditional activities such as barbeques, trips, family gatherings, and parties!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI spent most of the weekend with my family and friends and was able to go to a really fun memorial day party\u201d, said junior Myah Downing. \u201cIt was nice to have time together and enjoy the long weekend\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Others took advantage of the long <\/span>weekend to travel or spend time\u00a0<\/span>with friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy family and I went to Newport for the day,\u201d said junior Kassandra Zeni. \u201cIt was a great way to spend the weekend and also do some fun things like shop and try out new restaurants”.<\/span><\/p>\n

While many enjoyed the time off engaging in various activities, some students balanced the fun with reflection. \u201cMemorial Day is about more than just having a day off,\u201d said junior Cade Volpicelli. \u201cIt\u2019s important to remember the people who served our country and made the sacrifices that let us enjoy our freedom\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Local Memorial Day ceremonies and parades also drew community members together to honor fallen service members. The Fairfield Memorial Day Parade, that continued regardless of the rainy weather holding back many other Connecticut <\/span>parades, continued to march around Fairfield to recognize the holiday\u2019s significance.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Fairfield Parks & Recreation website, the Fairfield Memorial Day parade featured \u201cveteran groups, military units, the Fairfield High School marching band, community groups and organizations, the Fairfield Police Department, and the Fairfield fire and paramedic units\u201d. <\/span>\u00a0Other entertainment such as patriotic music played by a band as well as the ceremony paying tribute to veterans was also included.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the school year enters its final weeks and students await the last day of school, the long weekend provided students with an opportunity to recharge from their classes workloads while remembering the true purpose of Memorial day, honoring the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
