Comments flood in by the second. One day an ordinary teenager and the next , thousands of people are anxiously waiting hours to just take a selfie with the instantly famous video maker. Evidently, there is only one network powerful enough to launch the success of hundreds of regular people: Youtube. With over six billion visitors every month, Youtube is a website where anyone can upload a video for the world to see. For some, these weekly or sometimes even daily videos have caught the eyes of millions of people across the world with just the click of a button.

“I watch Youtube because it’s interesting. There are always new videos out everyday. Some videos are funny and make me laugh, while others are serious and make me question things that go on in the world” explains senior Ryan Martins, who recently started to make videos of his own.

Youtube has created an unbelievable career for people who once led normal lives. People initially upload videos to connect with friends, express themselves, or just vent about life. Overtime, with requests from random viewers who find their channel, they produce quality content such as skits or challenge videos. These Youtube personalities, or Youtubers, receive more and more views, comments, and subscribers daily. Eventually, they earn money from these videos orignially intended for pure entertainment. Youtubers then travel around the world, meeting fans at sold-out-events called “meet-ups,” while keeping up with videos and millions of subscribers.

“I started making videos for fun. As I watched Youtube and saw how much fun most Youtubers were having, I decided that why not give it a shot? My three other cousins and I decided that whenever we were together on weekends or at family gatherings, that we would make videos just for fun and to see what would happen. Our base grew slightly over time and now we are at 3,000 subscribers” adds Martins, who has high hopes to continue developing videos.

Some leading Youtubers, including Tyler Oakley, Bethany Mota (Macbarbie07), Shane Dawson, and Zoe Sugg (Zoella), having over 5.5 million subscribers and counting. Jack Baran or “thatsojack,” who graduated with from Fairfield Warde High School in 2014, has accumulated over 900,000 subscribers throughout his time on Youtube so far.

These Youtube stars have videos ranging from beauty and fashion, to gaming and geekery, and to just simple question and answer videos. Felix Kjellberg, or “PewDiePie,” has achieved over 30 million subscribers by just uploading videos of himself playing video games or online games his viewers request him to play. Sounds simple right?

“I truly do not believe it is easy to become ‘big’ on Youtube. It certainly takes a lot of time and effort. However, if you are the type of person that can be in front of a camera and talk to the world, well, then it would be easy,” Martins points out. “You have to put out good content that most people would enjoy watching and set a theme for your channel… Although, I do believe that it is easy to become noticed by a few hundred people if you have a couple videos that most people enjoy and would share with others. However, you have to keep putting out creative content to keep people attracted and to be able to grow into a big Youtuber.”

Clearly, Youtube has become a successful job for some. From interviewing celebrities to hosting red carpet events and going on tour, Youtube has drastically changed the lives of many. In addition, Youtubers attend award shows such as the MTV Video Music Awards and the Billboard Music Awards, while some have even won their own Teen Choice Awards. Others have met Barack Obama, have written books, produced music, and created makeup and clothes lines. By just clicking “upload,” these once regular people are taking the world over by storm.

Watch out, because YouTubers are the next generation of fame.

Jamie Capece ‘15 EE Contributor A click of a button and the video is uploaded.
