This year the Harvest Ball, also known as cotillion, will be held on November fifth at the Waterview in Monroe, Connecticut from 7:00 to 10:30 pm. School sponsored events such as the Harvest Ball are times when students come together in a safe, inviting, and supervised school sponsored event. What a better way to start the school year back again than with a dance that is less formal than prom, but just as fun. The anticipation for the Harvest Ball has girls finding the perfect dress and guys finding the perfect tux. For some, the inevitable romance that comes with such an event makes memories that will never be forgotten. As Vanessa Kenealy said, “Junior Cotillion was one of the best nights of my life. When ‘Someboy like you’ came on and I was dancing with my boyfriend, I felt like it was only the two of us and I forgot about everyone else there. I thought that type of stuff only happened at the movies, I didn’t think that it would happen to me.” Vanessa is sure that she wasn’t the only one feeling sparks, as there were plenty of couples there.

For seniors, the Harvest Ball comes just in time to reduce some stress during a busy time of their high school career. Fall is the time when many students are overwhelmed planning for college. While they are trying to put together college applications and resumes before the respective deadlines, cotillion is a chance to dance the stress away and be hassle free, if only for one night. Senior Maggie Velloso said, “I have been filling out the common app for days, going away to different states on college road trips, and hunting down my teachers for college applications. I think Cotillion will be a time to relax a bit and enjoy one of the last high school experiences I’m going to have before I go away.”

Whether it is for romance or for a break from college planning, most students go for one simple reason: to have an amazing time! Ximena Cordal said “I had so much last year as a junior. I’m trying to get all my friends to go again this year. The candy bar they had was amazing, and overall it was great.”

So upperclassmen: get ready to make lasting memories with your friends. These are memories to take with you when you head off to college. Underclassmen get excited for the future and an amazing night that you have coming your way in the years to come!

By Jossy Layedra ‘13 It is almost time for the Harvest Ball.
