It is celebrated in many countries around the world with primarily Roman Catholic populations. Mardi Gras takes place on the day before the religious season of Lent begins. However, the festivities extend to more than just one day. Over time, Mardi Gras has become a week-long festival, but this year the actual date of Mardi Gras is Tuesday, February 17.

The holiday can originally be dated back to religious festivities of fertility and spring. This was curated when Christianity was first brought to Rome, and religious leaders chose to integrate the popular local traditions into the new faith. ‘Mardi’ means “Tuesday” in French, and ‘Gras’ means “fat”. Hence, Mardi Gras is often known as Fat Tuesday, and old traditions would include indulging in various rich foods as means of the festivities. Typically, preceding Lent many people would consume foods such as meat, eggs, and milk, knowing they would be avoided for a period of time. This is why Mardi Gras festivities are commonly referred to as carnival, which is derived from the Latin word carnem, for meat.

Today, Mardi Gras is largely celebrated in certain cities, one important location being New Orleans in Louisiana. The United States commonly associates New Orleans with Mardi Gras, as French Colonial Settlements originally took part in public festivities, masked balls, and formal dinners there. In 1857, floats were introduced to New Orleans and therefore it became a very popular place for festivities to take place. Even now, celebrations include parties, parades, and music that all of the public enjoys. In these parades, extravagant masked riders on decorated floats can be seen as well as marching bands.

One special tradition that accompanies Mardi Gras is the throwing of beads and other tokens of colors that represent the holiday. These colors primarily include purple, green, and gold, which symbolize justice, faith, and power. Additionally, another classic festivity of Mardi Gras includes the traditional king cake. This is a ring shaped cake decorated with Mardi Gras colors, and often it holds a small hidden figurine of a baby!

Often, Mardi Gras is commonly recognized by masquerade balls that are characterized by colorful, unique masks that people spend time decorating together. In New Orleans and other locations that largely celebrate Mardi Gras, it is observed as a holiday that allows people to let loose and have fun. The parades are huge public celebrations that everyone is invited to join. These parades are individually put together by groups known as krewes. Every krewe has a ball that reveals a king, queen, and court every year. These groups execute parades, costume balls, and other events during Mardi Gras. Overall, Mardi Gras is a festive holiday characterized by extravagant festivities with traditional roots that are traced back thousands of years.

Feature Photo Courtesy: nypost.com

Hadley Taraska ‘27 EE Staff Writer Mardi Gras is both a popular culture phenomenon as well as a Christian holiday established thousands of years ago.
