Ryan Gosling’s new film Project Hail Mary is nothing short of perfection, mixing beautiful cinematography with a great score and loveable characters, and it’s exactly what we needed to be reminded of the joy we once got when we went to movie theaters.

Adapted from the Andy Weir novel of the same name, the film takes place in space in a far away solar system. Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a space station after a long induced coma with no memory of who he is, where he is, or why he’s there. After searching for answers he finds the other crew members dead, meaning that he is all alone in the middle of space with no recollection of his purpose. However, as time goes by he slowly regains his memory in increments and realizes that he is on the Project Hail Mary and he is on a one-way trip to find the reason why the star named Tau Ceti is not infected by Astrophage; an alien lifeform that has been draining the sun’s energy.

When Grace reaches the star, however, he finds that another ship is also there. This is when he meets Rocky, the alien rock spider that has been capturing the hearts of viewers since the film’s release. As it turns out, Rocky is on the same mission as Grace and he is trying to save his home planet Erid. After a little while of extra-terrestrial charades, Grace finds that Rocky’s crew had also passed away on the mission and he becomes able to make a translator on his laptop so he can truly talk to Rocky.

An unlikely friendship is formed between the two. They both bond while working together on the mission as they are both grateful to no longer be alone. Eventually, Rocky finds out that Grace will not return home and will die in space after the mission and becomes very upset despite Grace assuring him that it’s ok and that he has made peace with it. Then one of the most heartfelt moments of the film happens: Rocky offers Grace some of his Astrophage (which has also been used as fuel) so that he could get home; at the expense of Rocky getting home six years slower. When Grace tries to decline, Rocky tells him “Rocky watch crew die, could not fix. Now Grace say Grace will die, Rocky fix”. This moment had the audience on the brink of tears as Grace breaks down at the realization that his life will not be cut short and he hugs Rocky telling him that all that stuff he said about making peace with it was a complete lie.

This moment is soon followed by a visually beautiful moment when Grace has to go out and collect Astrophage samples from the unaffected star. The scene of Grace floating in front of the majestic green planet that the Astrophage is coming from is beautiful but it soon becomes gorgeous when the IR camera is turned on and Grace is surrounded by red Astrophage life forms. During this, there is comedic dialogue from Rocky telling Grace that humans are terrible at naming things and Grace decides to name the planet after Rocky’s mate, Adrian.

Rocky and Grace both study the samples and realize that the same amount of Astrophage is leaving as compared to the amount going to Adrian, the problem with that is that the amount leaving should be about double the amount in comparison. Rocky gets an epiphany that the life on Adrian is killing the Astrophage and that if they could get some of the lifeforms they can save both Earth and Erid.

The two immediately get to work on getting lifeforms but in the process Grace gets knocked out cold and Rocky risks his life to get him to the medical bay of the space station. Grace eventually wakes up to find a weakened Rocky who asks him to watch him sleep and Grace agrees on the condition that Rocky wakes up. This scene is a total tearjerker. I hadn’t realized how attached I had grown to Rocky until this moment of the film and I couldn’t believe that a literal rock spider was making me on the verge of crying.

Rocky needed to wake up. Not just for the sake of the audience but for the sake of his entire species. Grace had no clue how to get the newly named Tauoeba (what Grace called the lifeforms from Adrian) to Erid. He needed Rocky for that. Luckily for Erid and the emotions of the viewers; Rocky woke up. After the relief of Rocky’s survival passes, Grace and Rocky go their separate ways as they each head back to their respective planets.

However, something goes awry and Grace finds that Astrophage is evolving to escape the Zenonite containers and realizes that Rocky’s entire ship is made out of Zenonite and that if he doesn’t save him then he will die a slow and painful death in space. So Grace makes the decision to use his fuel not to return to Earth but to save his friend. When Grace arrives at Rocky’s ship and thankfully finds Rocky still alive.

Back on Earth, agents working for all the world’s leaders find the items sent back by Grace and begin working on saving the Earth, believing that Grace has died a hero. Unbeknownst to the people on Earth, Grace is actually alive and well. Grace returned to Erid with Rocky and Eridian scientists built him an ecosystem to live on the other planet. The film ends with Grace teaching Eridian students, just like he did with the students of Earth.

I’ll put it bluntly, I loved this movie. It was heartfelt, gorgeous, and written beautifully. The hype for this film is definitely deserved. I found the movie so amazing that I actually went out and bought the Andy Weir novel that it was adapted from.

Ryan Gosling has captured the attention of moviegoers for over 10 years now. Whether he’s dancing on a lovely night in Los Angeles with Emma Stone or making friends with a literal rock; it seems that there is nothing the man can’t do.

Isaac Gramse ‘26 EE Movie Review In a time of lazy sequels and reboots; whenever something original comes out, it’s a breath of fresh air regardless of the quality.
