Somehow, someway, we are finally here. Four years of writing, meetings, and deadlines have culminated in one final article for me to write here at Eagle’s Eye.

Since the beginning of the year, I have been dreading the day that would come when I would finally have to put down the pen and hand over the reins of editor-in-chief to the next year. Not only will I no longer be able to serve this publication, but I will be forced to let go of one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school tenure. Out of everything I do now, Eagle’s Eye is the one activity that has stayed the same for me since my Freshman year.

Originally, I joined the club because my Mom forced me to in order to build spots on my college resume. However, I soon discovered that the club was about a lot more than just writing articles. It was about discipline, creativity, and consistency. More importantly, establishing habits that would last me for the next four years. Early on, I made myself a promise that no matter what, I was gonna write 1-2 articles for the paper every week. Rain or snow. Weekend or Weekday. 100 words or 500 words. That article was gonna get done, and that’s exactly what I did.

Covering so many topics from sports to politics to THS not only opened my eyes to many new perspectives, but it also granted me a newfound curiosity in things I never felt were interesting or worth writing about before. Early on, I was focused purely on sports and covering athletics. As my interest transitioned, so did my topics, and I began to get more into abstract concepts and niche inquiries.

I am proud of the work I have done, with my only regret being that I did not encourage more people to keep up the same habits I have. For me, I have never viewed writing an article as work. Only an exercise to test my knowledge, skill, and patience. I have never spent more than 70 minutes on an article before, and mustering the effort to spend 30 minutes on something once a week was surprisingly easy.

Over time, as my articles have slowly gotten more complex, I have seen the improvement in my writing and, along with it, my improvement as a person. I have watched myself grow up and evolve alongside my articles and everything I did for the club. I will always have the website to come back to, and when I look back at my writing ten, twenty years from now, even more progress will only be reflected.

When I became editor, my focus changed from just writing articles to being actively involved in the club in a way that got others involved. I finally noticed the writing of other members of the club and how they were evolving the same way I was.

While we are yet to establish the same physical paper that was present at THS pre-COVID, we have established our own unique style of club that allows for freedom and growth rather than structure and stagnation. What’s important about Eagle’s Eye, more than any other club, is that it is the only one that requires you to write based purely on your own motivation. Nobody’s telling you anything. Nobody’s making things difficult. You become your own exigence, and in finding the strength to start you work towards being able to handle more difficult tasks outside the paper.

My writing would not be what it is today without the countless hours of practice Eagle’s Eye has let me put in. I would not be who I am today without those same hours. It’s not easy, but seeing your hard work pay off over time, with your byline appearing more and more times on the website, makes the journey all worth it.

Thank you to everyone who has read my pieces and everyone who has encouraged me to keep writing even when I wanted to give up. Whether it was helping me get into college, helping me improve my skills, or helping me cure my boredom when I needed something to do, Eagle’s Eye has always been there for me. Whether you’re a student, a teacher, or a simple reader, I hope my work has done the same for you. Thank you to Mr. Pelligra, thank you to my fellow editors, and thank you to Eagle’s Eye for a journey I will never forget.
