Attention spans are being shortened, movies are being written so that whilst you scroll, you can watch the film–or rather, look up every now and then, without being confused as to what’s happening, and ChatGPT provides all that you need to know about anything, from anime to politics, right at your fingertips. At a glance, this seems like incredible news! Who needs to think anymore? That is something of the past!

But this is far from incredible. As generative AI grows in power, becoming more intelligent, more uncanny, humans become less human. With the death of critical thinking, a new foe begins to stir. Students refuse to do worksheets without running it through an AI system, scrambling for the answers, and adults beg ChatGPT to write their grocery lists. “A recent MIT Media Lab study reported that “excessive reliance on AI-driven solutions” may contribute” to “cognitive atrophy” and shrinking of critical thinking abilities” (Is AI dulling our minds? — Harvard Gazette). It is used to respond to simple text messages, write essays, and become a therapist. This has led to immense damage to critical thinking skills, complete dependence on technology. Ads in social media are sneakier, promoting AI study apps and AI this, AI that. In the few times that ChatGPT has crashed, the world lost its mind. People posted videos crying and panicking.

But AI is just another tool. Even if it is being abused, it can still be stopped. If you find yourself struggling to regain control over your AI usage, don’t worry! Limiting screen time, deleting apps, and leaving your phone and/or other devices in another room can help. Despite the simple ease of using it, it is important to be able to do these things on your own. If you find yourself with no other solutions, then it is okay to use AI. But be careful when using it: it is a very dangerous slope, possibly worse than social media. AI can be incredible, but only if used right.

Amber Schenker ’27 EE Staff Writer The ability to think is beginning to grow numb.
