Teachers are able to create lesson plans to help enhance their classrooms and explain different methodologies. On the other hand, students are able to refine their writing, ask for suggestions or clarifications, and ask for practice tests or quizzes to help facilitate their learning.

Nonetheless, it is extremely easy to misuse AI. One of teachers’ biggest concerns is students using AI to pass off its writing as their own, as it is getting increasingly difficult to tell the difference between human writing and AI writing due to advancements in technology.

My AP Statistics class provided the perfect opportunity to research further. For our project, my partner and I investigated how accurately THS teachers could detect AI-generated writing.

For this experiment, we created our treatments for the experiment by generating 4 passages about various topics using Claude AI, and wrote 4 passages ourselves on the same topics.

We then stratified by department and randomly selected 40 THS teachers. That meant that we selected five teachers from each department: Math, Science, Social Studies, Wellness, English, Fine Arts, World Language, and Agriculture.

Next, we gave them each a sheet with four passages. Each teacher received a different sheet. Some teachers received sheets with 4 AI passages, some with 3 AI, 1 Human, 2 AI, 2 Human, and so on. We determined which teacher got the corresponding sheet using a random assignment. Then, we asked each selected teacher to mark the passage of being either AI or human.

The results were quite surprising. Our results indicated that we are 95% confident that the true proportion of correctly detected passages is between 0.272 and 0.592. Additionally, nobody except one person out of the 40 teachers we selected guessed 100% correctly. However, multiple teachers got 0% correct. Most teachers got 50% correct or lower. What was even more intriguing was that the teachers’ results did not vary significantly across departments.

Many teachers remarked that they found the task challenging. For us, this was thought provoking. If teachers had to second guess multiple times on whether or not a passage was AI or human written, it might mean AI has significantly advanced to the point where we should be concerned about its misuse in classrooms.

Aditi Jabitapuram ‘27 EE Staff Writer The rise of technology and a new era of Artificial Intelligence has had many beneficial impacts on classrooms.
