While many people have heard of Alzheimer’s, there are still a lot of misunderstandings about what the disease actually is and how it affects people and their families.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects the brain and can cause problems with memory, thinking, communication, and everyday activities. Although forgetting things is one of the most well-known signs, Alzheimer’s involves much more than simply being forgetful. As the disease progresses, people can have difficulty completing tasks they once found easy or recognizing familiar people and places.

World Alzheimer’s Month is a chance to learn more about the disease and support those who are affected by it. World Alzheimer’s Day takes place on September 21, but awareness efforts continue throughout the entire month. Communities and organizations may hold events such as fundraisers, educational programs, and memory walks to bring attention to the issue.

This year, a main focus includes early diagnosis, with the message, “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do” (ADI). If someone notices persistent memory loss, difficulty completing familiar tasks, confusion about time or place, or changes in mood or behavior that interfere with daily life, it may be time to speak with a healthcare professional for a formal evaluation. Getting a diagnosis can help people and their families understand what is occurring and learn about available treatment, care, and support. It can also give families more time to plan for the future and allow them to make important decisions together.

Scientists are also continuing to research Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Researchers are looking for better ways to detect these diseases, slow their progression, and develop new treatments. Although there is still a lot that scientists do not know, continued research gives hope to the millions of people affected.

For students, World Alzheimer’s Month is a reminder that awareness can start with something as simple as learning the facts. Alzheimer’s may affect someone’s grandparent, family member, friend, or neighbor. Showing patience, understanding and respect toward people living with dementia can make a real difference.

World Alzheimer’s Month is not just about learning about a disease. It is also about recognizing the people and families affected by it. By talking about Alzheimer’s and getting rid of the stigma surrounding dementia, we can help create a more supportive and understanding community.

Featured Photo courtesy: ageucate.com

Olivia Merva ‘29 EE Staff Writer Every September, people around the world recognize World Alzheimer’s Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
