The test seems like it decides the rest of your education forever, but the SAT is not hard to tackle. Any student can get a great score as long as they put in the work and prepare correctly.

First off, the SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities in order for them to determine, alongside transcripts, essays, letters of recommendations, and other factors, whether they accept you or not compared to thousands of other students. It gives a relative representation of how a student may succeed in college.

The SAT takes place throughout the school year; it happens almost every month, running from the end of August to the beginning of June. It’s set up into two sections, one math and one reading and writing, which are also split up into two modules each. The second module is determined by your previous modules performance. Overall, the test is only two hours and fourteen minutes with a break in the middle.

The test seems daunting, as only a short amount of time can change the trajectory of your future. However, if you prepare for the SAT like any other test, you will likely not be as stumped as you believe, and following certain tips may increase your outcome.

#1: Practice time management. Before the test, study a beneficial amount of time so you are adequately prepared for the exam. Studying is different for everyone. Study how you study for other exams, whether that is practice exams or notes, etc. One thing that goes for all people is studying in increments. Know when your test day is and study 20-30 minutes daily (or however you choose too), so that you are not cramming right before it. During the test, it’s important not to get caught up on questions, come back to harder questions after answering easy ones. All questions are equal in points.

#2: Focus on your weaknesses: Some of the questions or sections of the SAT may be easy for you, and others may be challenging. Some may struggle with aspects of math, and some with reading. It is important to know this before taking the exam and taking extra time to improve on those specific skills so when it’s time to take the exam they are less of an issue.

#3: Master Desmos. The built in calculator is a great tool to use. It allows you to quickly solve problems so you can spend less time on harder, longer problems.

#4: Put yourself first, The test is important but it does not define you. Make sure to relax and stay calm. Stressing out will only make things worse. Before the test, work at your own pace when studying. Make sure to say if you have eaten and hydrated, and get a good night’s sleep. Try not to compare yourself to others, and try your best.

The SAT is only a test and never the end of the world. While preparing is important and sure to improve your score, do your best and remember that you can always take it again.

Feature Photo Courtesy: Collegeboard

Nathaniel Angus ‘28 EE Staff Writer The SAT is one of the most feared tests amongst students.
