Do thoughts of exorcisms form goose bumps that race down your spine? Do haunted houses and spirits appear in your worst nightmares? Thoughts of ghosts are amplified during Halloween, a holiday that highlights evil spirits and depicts scary situations that very few people would actually want to approach first hand. However, for THS’s Literacy Workshop classes, thoughts of Halloween day created a field trip experience that will never be forgotten. The field trip took students to and explained the truth behind some of the most famous and haunted places in Connecticut.
Before the field trip, grades nine and ten Literacy Workshop classes read stories about haunted places in Connecticut that author Donna Kent put together. Kent toured with the classes through the Easton Cemetery, Presbyterian Church, and the Milestone Inn.
The learning did not stop the whole field trip. Kent started the field trip by recapping ghost huntings she did in private homes, and discussed her amazing experiences all the way up to their last destination at the haunted restaurant, the Milestone Inn. The entire field trip was described as an amazing lecture.
When the topic of ghosts comes up at THS, people tend to have different reactions about what they believe. THS senior Jeremy Lewis states, “Because of the hype and incredible amount of talk, along with the media influence, its almost impossible not to get sucked into believing in ghosts.”
Other seniors, Nick Laskos and Taylor Milne do not believe in ghosts, and other things involving spirits, but think ghosts on television and movies are just a way to draw people’s attention. No matter what personal opinions are about ghosts, all the students and teachers agree that this haunted field trip was a worthwhile experience.
When sophomore Allie Shapiro was asked what she would change, she responded, “Nothing, it was an educational day with a fun twist that left students wanting to learn more.”
Field trip advisor Ms. Jalowiec agreed. “It was awesome to see so many of my students involved by asking questions about different myths and experiences of Donna Kent. We learned that most ghost hunting stories are embellished with special effects to get people to watch the show.”
Everyone who was asked about the field trip agreed it would receive five out of five stars, and students said they would definitely go on it again. For the Trumbull High Students who attended, they can say that they ate a meal at a haunted restaurant, bravely entered the old Easton Cemetery, and ventured through a church that has done the world’s most exorcisms in Monroe.
