As the holidays approach, so do school breaks. Students often use this time to relax and focus on themselves rather than the abundance of homework given to them during the school week. However, after breaks students come back to school with little recollection of what they were learning, making it hard for them to readjust to their previous academic cycles. This issue sparks controversy over whether students should be given homework during breaks.
During the school year, students are overwhelmed with constant assignments and homework. “I have to do so much homework, I have no time for myself”, says an anonymous THS student.
School breaks are a perfect time for students to let go of academic pressure and focus on self-care.
Students could get more sleep, spend time with friends, and overall, be relaxed. Homework takes a lot of time out of students’ days and they deserve a break once in a while. No homework during breaks gives students the perfect time to spend their day relaxing instead of doing assignments. Homework may also take away from time students spend with their families. Family time is valuable as work and school cuts their time together short. Homework may also cause student burnout. This is due to the fact that their brains won’t get enough rest and they will constantly be working on homework trying to get it done instead of resting.
On the other hand, coming back from school breaks, students often find themselves forgetting the material they were previously learning. Homework over breaks is a great way to keep a student’s brain active and remind them what they were learning prior to the break. Also, during the school year, students create a regular routine for themselves and losing the routine may contribute to missing assignments and grades dropping. Homework keeps students in check and helps them follow their routine. Also, during breaks, students will have time to finish their assignments at comfortable paces rather than rushing all their work as soon as they come back from a time period of relaxation. Overall, homework over breaks help students stay in line and continue with their routine.
Homework over breaks has both pros and cons. Homework can burn out a student, take time away from relaxation, and cut into time with family. But it can also help students keep their academic cycles and prevent them from forgetting essential skills. Ultimately, finding the middle may be essential to prevent burnout while keeping their academic cycles and skills.
