The highly anticipated boys ice hockey team started their season on a positive note on December 15th at the Shelton Rinks. The Eagles defeated Watertown/Pomperaug 5-4 and had several players who were able to show their strong skill sets. The Eagles took an early lead and scored five goals in the first period. Shortly after the puck first hit the ice, senior captain Peter Antoniou scored the first goal of the season. He was assisted by senior captain Zach Jager and senior captain Luca Minopoli.

“It felt unreal to score the first goal and it got the ball rolling in the first period. The team is absolutely buzzing right now,” said Antoniou.

Senior Luca Minopli led the team with two goals and two assists. Other goals were scored by senior Matt Farasciano and junior Austin Ashby with the game-winning goal. Goal assists throughout the game were by junior Giancarlo Montanaro with two, junior Tyler Hickey, junior Luke Ligori, and junior Jake Terlik.

In the second and third periods, the Eagle’s offense slowed down but, fortunately, their defense was able to keep Watertown/Pomperaug at only four goals. Towards the end, the game got intense since WP was only one goal behind. Trumbull’s defense had to be at their best in order to keep their lead. In the final minutes, the Eagles were able to stop WP from scoring the game-tying goal even after they added an extra attacker to their offense. After the final buzzer went off, the Eagles celebrated their first win of the season on the ice.
