Many students wonder whether midterms should be moved to before winter break instead of right after it. I’m sure this question comes up often to many students, especially when everyone returns from vacation and immediately has to start studying again. Some people think moving midterms earlier would make school less stressful, while others believe it would create new problems. It’s a topic that affects every student, so it’s worth looking at both sides.
One reason to move midterms before break is that it would let students actually relax during vacation. When tests are scheduled for January, many students spend their break worrying about studying or feeling guilty for not studying enough. Having midterms earlier would also mean students take the tests while the material is still fresh in their minds. This could help people feel more prepared and less overwhelmed.
“Midterms should be before break because it would allow us to have a stress-free winter break while still having time for preparation,” says freshman Olivia Merva.
However, there are also downsides to moving midterms before break. Teachers might feel rushed to finish units, and students could end up with even more work in December, which is already a busy month. There are holidays, events, and shorter school weeks, so fitting in review time could be difficult. Some students also like having extra time over break to catch up on studying, even if they don’t always use it.
“Students need that extra time to review,” said freshman Tessa Gabriel. “They can get all the studying they need done on their time off”.
Overall, it is a pretty split opinion among students. Even though there are some challenges, many people believe the benefits like less stress and better focus are worth it. But at the same time people love the extra time so they can do better on all their tests. Whether schools will ever change the schedule is unclear, but it’s a discussion that matters to a lot of students.
