In 2026 Black History month celebrates its 100th year anniversary. There is a significant amount to celebrate, even though some see an attempt to erase black history in recent discourse and actions by the government. Despite the controversy, people are still endeared to make their impact.
According to a segment on the San Diego Fox News affiliate, President Donald Trump has claimed that some African American history lessons are meant to indoctrinate people into hating the country. His administration has directed actions, from dismantling an exhibit about slavery in Philadelphia and removing black history from national parks, that have stirred resentment in the African-American community.
Having a divided political climate has only made some people’s voices louder, however. Civil rights organizations, artists, scholars, and young activists have been enjoying the 100 year milestone. There have been numerous books published to mark this anniversary. Not only are new books being published but there are hundreds of lectures and learning opportunities for everyone.
A century ago the concept of Black History week was initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. The Month of February was chosen because it was Abraham Lincoln’s birth month. February was also the month that Fredrick Douglas chose for his birth month. In 1976 President Gerald Ford officially recognized and considered February to be Black History month. After the idea of a black history month we now have a black history month. Black History Month and black culture is still proudly celebrated to this day.
Activists have warned one another to not take this anniversary for granted because of the current political climate. Despite the unprecedented state of America right now and the divide between political parties this has not stopped the celebration. The history and culture of black people continues to be proudly displayed across the nation.
