With many shows and movies coming out every day and many more being canceled or removed from streaming services, it can often be difficult to find a good watch. Many people often find themselves rewatching old shows or scroll endlessly for something worthwhile. But while our comfort shows gain such a title for a reason, the new Apple TV mystery series Widow’s Bay deserves to be on everyone’s radar as an up-and-coming standout. Where the supernatural storytelling of Stephen King meets classic thrillers and the municipal humor of Parks and Recreation, the show walks the tightrope with confidence and style and the charming qualities of colonial New England. Each new episode that comes out is full of laughs and scenes to raise your heartbeat.
Tom Loftis (played by Matthew Rhys), the town’s skeptical, mainland-born mayor is hell-bent on modernizing the WiFi-less, isolated island and turning it into “The Next Martha’s Vineyard”. He spends his time fighting dead zones with no service, wrangling his rebellious teenage son, and trying to attract outside visitors. The moment his plans seem to be working, though, they get a wrench thrown in them by his town’s centuries-old superstitions and lore that have come to pass. A curse, a creeping fog, bizarre happenings, and violent spikes in madness have all begun to affect the residents, but Loftis’s skepticism won’t allow him to believe despite what happened to his wife.
Similarly, follow some of Tom’s constituents like Wyck (played by Stephen Root), the known “town hick”, as he tries to get the mayor to see reason and accept the truth, or Patricia (played by Kate O’Flynn) as she grapples with her previous experience as the only surviving victim of a heinous criminal turned urban legend.
Even with only seven episodes out as of writing, Widow’s Bay has quickly climbed the ranks. It’s earned itself the #1 spot for Apple TV as well as a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.3/10 on IMDb, and surely, a place in every viewers’ hearts.
There’s something for everyone in Widow’s Bay, just not an exit.
