Trumbull has long prided itself on a strong wrestling team with dedicated athletes. A local club, South Side, recently competed in a tournament, demonstrating the level of our athletes. “Columbus Day Duals” were held September 26–27, 2026, at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Many athletes from Trumbull High School and all over Connecticut traveled to compete in the annual tournament. THS’s strong and dedicated athletes contributed to the success of the club.
Over 200 elite level teams competed for the top spot at the weekend tournament. South Side Wrestling Club placed in second in the American Division with an 8-1 record. The tournament offered a strong folk style wrestling division (high school wrestling is most commonly folk style) for boys, and a free style division (free style is what you see in pro matches like the Olympics) for girls. For many wrestlers, off-season tournaments like this one is a rare opportunity to gain mat experience outside of high school teams.
Unlike most tournaments, the Columbus day matches were not your typical independent matches, but a team-based event. Wrestlers competed as a team rather than a bracketed division across every weight class.
A wrestler from the club says, “I was happy to be able to see everyone’s different skill levels, and be able to compete with people from all over, great experience”.
As the fall season continues and we get closer to our high school wrestling season, coaches and athletes look forward to seeing their hard work pay off, hoping to achieve new successes. Every match is an opportunity to grow as a person and an athlete for the wrestlers who competed over the weekend.
