On Thin Ice

With the 2012-2013 NHL season currently in a lockout between the players and the league officials, hockey seems to be at a halt. However, for the Trumbull Eagles Varsity hockey team, the word ‘halt’ is the last thing that describes them.

Since mid-October, the team as a whole has been training and working hard to achieve goals very similar to that of last year, winning the Tier 2 State Championship against Branford High School. Unfortunately, losing star seniors to college such as Cory Watson and Mike Ahern affected this young team, which is now mostly made up of juniors and sophomores.

With an over-all record of 1-7 as of January 17th, 2013 the team is struggling to have a season like last year’s State Championship one.

“We did great things last year, and it will never be forgotten at Trumbull High. We have to keep our thoughts and determination on the present and the future in order to be successful,” said Nate Walker, a senior left wing.

He also noted the fact that the team is working hard to be successful for the future. In addition, Nate Walker, along with Captains Matt Paolini and AJ Dimasi must be a positive influence for other players, leading the underclassman.

“We have that hardworking mentality during practices, and the atmosphere is very positive. Our team is very determined to achieve goals that amount to and surpass the accomplishments of last year,” said captain AJ Dimasi.

With all the athletic achievements at Trumbull High School last year, the hockey team seemed to be the most surprising. Although a cold environment on the ice, the Golden Eagles look to keep the heat on other teams. Come support the varsity hockey team, as they look to defend the State Title and recreate a team that lost a majority of players who were seniors!
