When the air becomes brisk, and the leaves begin to transform into deep burgundies, fiery oranges, and exotic yellows, the inevitable change from lively summer to the beauty of fall bestows upon us an aura or feeling of pleasure and comfort. Scientists have been trying to prove if it is the cool air that mellows flaring tempers into a calm disposition, or the scent of cinnamon that lingers in the air, tantalizing the senses. Or is it is simply the Pumpkin Spiced Latte from Starbucks that everyone sucks down like water, or the thrill that Halloween brings, having the power to be whoever you want to be for a night? Whatever aspect of autumn that brings you the thrill of homey comfort, everyone can agree that the warm color palette that follows fall hand-in-hand every year is change that will never go out of style.
However, here at Trumbull High School, our student body is in dire need of a wake up call to enjoy the carefree cuteness of fall fashion. According to THS junior Jennifer Gomes, “At THS, fall fashion for most people seems to be solos or leggings or sweatpants with sweatshirts, besides the few people who always look their best in school. I think fall is our laziest season as a school.” Every year, once the thermometer drops below sixty degrees, the UGGs and solos and leggings resurface like a cockroach infestation that will not go away! How has the beautiful colors of fall become defined only by the shade of suede UGGs you own? Chestnut, Chocolate, or Black? Pick your poison. There is nothing cute or flattering about these chunky, awkward boots. So why are we unable to see as a school, that there is so much more than just fuzzy UGGs when the weather changes? Simply because students are set in their ways of dressing and fashion, and students here at Trumbull High School need to widen their mindset, and see into the horizon of their imagination.
Rather than resorting to the typical go-to outfits that most girls tend to reach for when the weather gets cooler, try experimenting with the natural and warm color palette that fall has to offer. According to Trumbull High School junior Caroline Forster, orange is her go to color for the fall time because “…[it] mirrors the leaves and pumpkins and it makes me feel calm and more mature.” There are so many wardrobe combinations that can be made with interchangeable textures, exotic prints, and contrasting colors that can make an outfit stand out from the average solos and sweats. Where is the creativity, the individuality? Isn’t it better to stand out and inspire others, rather than just being the average joe, stuck swimming with the same redundant and drab crowd?
When asked about an ideal fall outfit, Brittany Kabiko, a THS junior says that “An oversized sweater with leggings and boots [is ideal] because it is comfortable and keeps me warm.” While much of the THS population of girls all lean toward this “symbolic” fall outfit, not many students actually execute it, regardless of how effortless it is to put together! Rather than slumming in yogas and bumming in the hoodie that you found balled up on the floor of your bedroom this morning, yes we all notice, try to gravitate towards effortless staples that every girl’s wardrobe has! Whether it is the chunky knit sweater that is the back of the closet, or that basic black long-sleeved shirt that you vowed that you would never wear again, they can all be upgraded and made cute again!
The cute but warm chunky knit sweater that mom gave you years ago can be recycled into your everyday look without looking like you are drowning in the 80’s. The best way to is too invest in a sturdy thick waist belt that can show off your figure and not leaving you looking like a bag lady. A perfect hairstyle to wear with the sweater and the belt is the classy top knot. It helps to balance out the casualness of the sweater and add a polished, sophisticated touch. Wear the sweater with leggings or skinny jeans with a pair of sleek leather riding boots. If you are feeling daring for the day, complete this look with a red or raspberry lip that will give this easy but cute outfit the wow factor that demands attention.
Another easy outfit is with a basic colored long sleeved tshirt. Yes they are not the fanciest of tops, but it is all about how you wear them! According to Caroline Forster, her ideal outfit is “Jeans, boots and a jacket with a brightly colored shirt because it is comfortable and you can shed/add layers when you get hot/cold, and it looks cute too!” When wearing the basic/ colored t-shirt and adding just the right accessories, there is no need for fancy tops! Something as easy as adding a patterned scarf (no, Burberry knockoffs do not count!) with contrasting colors, or just as a way to add a pop of color to a basic black shirt, it could be all the accessories that you should need! But if you are in need of more if a wow factor, add a sophisticated blazer to the shirt with a bright bubble statement necklace. Even the blazer with the scarf would go great together, especially added with pearl earrings. There are endless possibilities when it comes to working with basic colored tops! It is an easy put-together-outfit for the night before, so no stress!
Fashion is an art that has to be perfected at Trumbull High School! No more of the yoga pants, the leggings that are worn as pants, the stereotypical Juicy tracksuits, the UGG-ly UGGs that look like moonboots, sloppy ponytails, and dirty/stained/ripped sweatshirts. Come on THS, lets all work together to class it up this fall! Do not let yourself fall into the lazy habit of slumming it once the weather gets cooler. You just might be surprised how a cute outfit will boost your confidence and mood for the day, give it a try!
