Students at Trumbull High participated in collecting canned goods in both their homerooms and academic classes as part of the Holiday Food Drive in December. Slowly but surely, the canned goods poured into the classes. Most students really amped up their game when teachers started to offer extra credit points and felt a competitive spirit arising in the classrooms.
On February 18th, students gathered around the delicious smelling foods including eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausage, and muffins. Mrs. Rizza, Mr. Jones, and Mrs. Curley individually worked together with their students to raise the winning amount of canned goods for charity, which was 561 total cans in just those three teachers’ classes alone.
At a celebratory breakfast, Mr. Guarino gave a warm speech thanking not only the students who participated in the Food Drive, but also Mr. Pijar for his hard work in putting together this event towards charities.
“I am truly proud of the students and impressed. I still think that we can do better and improve and make it even more challenging, but collecting the amount we raised has truly set the bar. What’s even better is that these canned goods are going to great charities,” Mr. Guarino stated.
Mr. Pijar additionally was thankful for the student body and their contributions to the project.
“I am extremely proud about what our school community did,” said Mr. Pijar. “We raised over 2,500 nonperishable items, which went to very good places for charity.”
Mrs. Rizza’s Period 7 ACP English class brought in a whopping 193 canned goods. Mrs. Rizza was glad she was able to “serve the community.” Her students were extremely happy with a mouthwatering dish to eat during second period.
“There was no plan to raise this amount of canned goods,” said sophomore Olivia Bucci.
Mrs. Curley’s Period 3 Honors Biology class raised the exact same amount as Mrs. Rizza’s class: 193 canned goods. “I am really proud of my students,” said Mrs. Curley.
A student of Mrs. Curley, Colin McLevy, notes, “The food is really good. I’m definitely enjoying it and glad I’m rewarded with the great breakfast. We worked this hard because Mrs. Curley made it a competition and we got 5 extra credit points. We also knew it was good of our hearts to do this good deed.”
“Mr. Pijar was nice in recognizing my kids coming in third place. I appreciate the generosity,” Jones remarked. All his students dove into a hearty meal knowing that they did really well in representing Mr. Jones’ class, coming in at third place with 175 canned goods.
Ultimately, Trumbull High had come together for a really good cause to support the Rescue Mission in Bridgeport, which distributed the food to other local soup kitchens. Students reached for a high goal and were super generous in helping out to fulfill a successful deed. While enjoying a hearty breakfast, these winning students felt good about themselves for doing the right thing in bringing non perishable items to school. No one does it like Trumbull High!
