On Monday, June 1, the THeSpian Society headed up to the Waterbury Palace Theater for the annual Connecticut High School Music Theater Awards Gala, which has been described as the Tony Awards of high school. The black-tie event honored the accomplishments of over ten high school theater departments across the state and surrounding areas.

Trumbull High was nominated for 15 awards, an amazing feat in itself. These nominations were for Outstanding Costuming Achievement, Outstanding Set Design Achievement, Outstanding Sound Design, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Music Direction, Outstanding Leading Actor (Zac Gottschall), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Michael Lepore and Jack Leonard), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Katherine Griffin), Outstanding Chorus, Student Achievement in Assistant Choreography (Ava Gallo), Student Achievement in Scenic Art Design (Cammy Kimball), and Outstanding Production of the Year.

The process for determining the winners is very complicated. Multiple rounds of judging go into simply deciding nominations, and so the 15 nominations Hello, Dolly! received were truly incredible and among the most impressive at the ceremony.

The TheSpian troupe came home with four awards: Outstanding Costuming Achievement (Merial Cornell, Mary Joan Wright, Jeanette Davidson, and honorarily Amanda Lee); Oustanding Supporting Actor (Michael Lepore as Cornelius Hackl); Outstanding Leading Actor (Zac Gottschall as Horace Vandergelder); and Outstanding Student Achievement (Cammy Kimball, for scenic art design).
