The movie 13 Hours, directed by the legendary Michael Bay, is about an elite team of Navy SEALS and other military personnel in a CIA base in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012. The actors in the movie include stars like James Badgett, John Krasinski, and Max Martini.

Taken from real accounts of the 11-year anniversary of the 9/11 attack, the film portrays the attack on the Benghazi embassy and CIA compound by terrorists from 9p.m. to 9a.m. This showed the harrowing courage of the commandos defending the two compounds as they were constantly being bombarded by bombs and gunfire. They must stay alive and stop important documents from the embassy and CIA base from falling into the terrorists’ hands before the whole place is overrun.

One of the main problems in the film for which it is criticized for is not being historically accurate. For example, the commander, played by David Costabile, gave the order to “stand down” to the soldiers who wanted to jump in and save the people trapped under gunfire from the terrorists.

Records from the Senate Intelligence Committee show that no such order was given out, but former Army Ranger Kris ”Tonto” who fought the dreadful night said it was true that he and others were told to “stand down”.

Some of the characters were also not fully developed during the movie. The soldiers have heartfelt conversations with their family on their laptops just before the attack, but seems too rushed and quickly soon after, the attack comes.

There are many special effects that range from great explosions from huge warheads to the many RPGs that are fired all around our heroes heads. The atmosphere towards the late night is enhanced with the gloomy fog that surrounds the compound casting an eerie glow as enemy soldiers’ shadows creep ever closer to the compound’s wrecked wall .

This film is one recent scarring memory of what our soldiers overseas have to deal with for our freedom. This film is a fine salute to the men and women who gave their lives for us and the introspective view into the life of the brave. I recommend everyone to watch it.
