This year, the Agriscience Farm Fair will take place on Saturday, October 21, from 10am to 3pm. Admission is free, and those who stop by will have the chance to visit the animals, play games, enter raffles, utilize the food trucks, and buy local and student goods from vendors.
Currently, the Agriscience Farm is home to 24 animals. They consist of: 2 horses, 1 cow, 1 alpaca, 1 duck, 2 female mini donkeys, 16 sheep, and even a feral cat that you may see if lucky! The animals will be out on the farm for all to see during the fair.
Additionally, there will be many games for children, who are encouraged to arrive in their Halloween costumes. They will have the opportunity to go bowling, decorate pumpkins, plant seeds, play ring toss, and more. Kids earn prizes upon completion of each activity, which all have minimal charge.
The majority of the goods sold at the vendors will be created by Agriscience’s own students. Each year, upperclassmen participate in a SAE, or supervised agricultural experience. This can consist of starting their own agricultural business and selling products, to volunteering and working for local businesses. They produce items such as jams, jellies, wine glasses, maple syrup, soaps, yarn crafts, room decorations, and jewelry. All of these products will be sold at the vendors and are the perfect start to fall!
Dr. Paslov, the director of Agriscience, explains that the many fun activities go on to ultimately benefit the program: “The Trumbull Ag Halloween Farm Festival offers a fun-filled day of animals, shopping, games, and food. Our farm’s large animals will be waiting to meet you as you learn about their care and personalities from our students. Ag student vendors and professional artisans will have their crafts on display for purchase. Children’s games will keep younger children entertained, while food truck delicacies will help you keep up your energy as you snap some photos, participate in our fundraising table, and buy some Ag gear. Events such as this one allow our students to volunteer their time for our school, sell their hand-made items, and share information about our wonderful program. Our parent group, Friends of the Farm, sponsors this festival and uses proceeds to provide scholarships to our seniors, FFA honor cords at graduation, snacks at our Movie Night, meals for our FFA National Convention participants, pizza for Ag Freshman Orientation, and many other things. Please come and support us!”
The fair will offer many fun experiences, games, and items, all of which will benefit both the program and the buyers.
On September 29, the Agriscience & Biotechnology Center took its students up to Massachusetts to attend the Big E, the 4th largest agricultural fair in the entire country. Although rainy and wet, students were able to visit the state buildings, buy agricultural goods and authentic food, and view several species of livestock. Each year, this trip marks the transition from summer to fall at Agriscience. And with fall comes the program’s annual fair, an event the students have been long preparing for. Be sure to swing by!
