The Girls Trumbull Track and Field meet on Monday, April 22nd was another successful day for all participants. Trumbull faced Greenwich, one of their toughest competitors in the FCIAC and gave it their all. Although they did not take the win (Greenwich 79, Trumbull 65), the runners, throwers, and jumpers left with their heads high still feeling fulfilled afterwards.
According to some, winning is not everything, especially at this point in the season. This was the girls third meet and it is a great time to keep pushing to get stronger as FCIACs and States approaches. Leela Kocinsky (12) said, “Last meet was a super fun race where I had my season’s best and so did a lot of my teammates, which always creates such an energetic and fun environment”.
Even though they did not win overall, the girls swept in events. Starting with the 100 meter dash, Trumbull took the top three spots with Mckenzyi Bell (9) coming in first, Kibali Odonald (11) in second, and Olivia Gibson (11) in third. The same three athletes swept in the 200 meter dash as well. Gibson took first for this race and achieved a PR of 27.2 and Odonald took second with a SR of 27.8. Trumbull also won and had a PR in the 4×100 relay run by Mckenzyi Bell, Kibali Odonald, Olivia Gibson, and Vanessa Maignan (11).
Overall, the team had forty seven athletes PR and eighteen athletes SR various events. Coach Dunn believes that these numbers put the team in a very good position this early in the season for the last three dual meets, invitational meets, and FCIACs and states coming up.
Some of the highlights from the meet were all the new qualifiers for FCIAC’s and states. In the 100 meter, Kibali O’donald qualified. She also qualified for the 200m along with Olivia Gibson. Katie Marchand qualified for states and FCIAC’s in the 1600m in this past meet. Following in the 3200m Leela Kocinsky and Maura Kane qualified as well.
These girls have persevered through these dual meets and done well which gives them practice and strength for the rest of the season but also the invitational meets they have participated in and the ones coming up. This past weekend many girls participated in the O’Grady’s relays in events such as the 4x1600m relay, SMR 800m, 4×100 Shuttle Hurdles, Long Jump, and Hammer on the first day. Following this on day two, other runners, throwers, and jumpers participated in many other events.
Despite the loss to Greenwich this meet, Trumbull made many improvements and had multiple wins in various events. On Tuesday April 30th, Trumbull will face another team, Westhill High School, on their senior night. The coaches and athletes are looking forward to this meet and a very successful rest of the season.
