As cold weather moved in with the official start of Winter, December 21, the fashion in the halls of THS underwent change. Saying goodbye to short sleeves, students now commonly come bundled up with scarves, sweaters, hoodies, and boots.
When getting dressed in the morning students have to make decisions based on warmth as well as appearance. Senior Steph Guerin says she prefers to wear short sleeve shirts but now has to throw on a sweatshirt too. “It is annoying because I have a lot more shirts than sweatshirts so I have less options and therefore my fashion suffers in the winter.”
Many girls agree that it is harder to get dressed in winter because they must balance keeping up with fashion and staying warm. Senior Madison McGillicuddy says that layering shirts, sweaters, jackets, or hoodies is a challenge because you never know how cold it will really be.
“I never know how warm to dress because of the difference in temperature between outside and in school. I assume I can rough it out during the brief moments I spend outside walking to my car but it is really cold so planning for warmth is necessary.”
A popular accessory girls use for warmth and while keeping up with fashion are scarves.
“They keep me warm and are fashion forward” says Carly Goroff.
Even though scarves were made for warmth, they have been integrated into indoor wear as well.
“I used to think scarves were not for indoors, but now they are acceptable and even fashionable. I can wear one to keep me warm and not have to worry about stowing it away once I’m inside because it is a part of my outfit too,” said Amanda Burtnette. Burnette hopes the scarf trend does not die any time soon because she loves their convenience.
As per usual, cold weather comes with an abundance of UGGs. Mark Ballaro, although not an UGG owner, says “They are very ugly, but a necessity in cold weather.”
Boy’s fashion does not make as dramatic of a change in winter. Summer or winter, they will be wearing sneakers and even shorts. Matt Vonschleusingin, seen in shorts mid-December, doesn’t take the weather into account while getting dressed.
“Cold weather doesn’t matter. I still wear shorts because I’m only outside for a minute and then my car is only cold for a minute. I can deal with it,” said Vonschleusingin.
This view is different from most girls who believe a coat is necessary even for those few minutes outside. Not all boys opt to just deal with the cold though.
Student Noah Levy wears his coat in winter. “Coats are not only to keep me warm but they are comfy to wear.”
It is safe to say girls are wearing long pants and other warm articles such as sweaters, scarves, and boots, but there is a larger variety of attire seen on both men and women in the halls of THS during the winter months, including shorts.

I think it is insane that boys are able to wear shorts during the winter. Not only is it frigid outside, but in a lot of my classes it’s too cold for me to stay in the room a whole period without wearing a jacket. But then again, maybe I am just not very tough. I do love scarves though.
