Spring has officially sprung! It is safe to say that a huge weight was lifted off of every student’s shoulders this week. From the looming SATs to tryouts for spring sports to seemingly endless school work in general, there is no doubt that March was a month of hard work. However, the good news is that these deadlines and pressures are gone. Birds are beginning to chirp, the sun is shining more, and flowers are blossoming, so get ready to make the most of the new season and beautiful weather!
When I reflect on spring, memories of late sports practices are the first things to pop into my head. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend joining a sports team this season. While most spring sports require tryouts and have already selected their players, outdoor track is open to everyone, and it is not yet too late to join. In addition to keeping you fit and healthy, sports allow you to relish the lovely weather and create special relationships with friends and teammates. I personally love and look forward to laughing with my friends and being in the sunshine after a long, grueling day of school. Sports have enabled me to make so many lasting friendships and gain a sense of myself as an individual, increasing my confidence and happiness. Even if sports are not for you, make sure to take advantage of the sunshine by running, biking, hiking, or engaging in another activity on your own. To make these adventures even more fun, consider bringing friends and/or family along. Go to trails that lead to beautiful views and waterfalls, and pack picnics or eat out at local restaurants afterward.
Another pleasant aspect of the spring season is the food. I believe that fresh, tasty foods should be enjoyed during the weekdays, and that restaurant meals and sweet treats should be saved for the weekend. Berries, radishes, carrots, onions, oranges, kale, and pineapple are among the fresh produce that can be eaten in salads, rolls, soups, and bowls. Healthy, tasty sources of proteins and carbs include chicken, quinoa, rice, turkey, and fish. Combine these food groups to make nourishing meals such as grilled chicken veggie bowls, lemon salmon with rice and steamed broccoli, and quinoa buddha bowls. To wash your meal down, drink fruit-infused water or fresh fruit smoothies. Not only are these meals healthier than most, but they also leave you feeling full and energetic. While eating healthy and nourishing your body, be sure to treat yourself now and then. On weekends, indulge in the occasional ice cream or dine in at your favorite restaurant.
This year, spring break will be from April 6 to April 14, giving us 9 days to recharge and have fun. Traveling is always a popular, relaxing way to have fun, and Washington D.C., New York, and Florida are among the most popular destinations for spring break vacations. If you choose to stay local, be sure to get out of your house and have fun and help out around town. Go to the movies with siblings, shop at the mall with friends, and volunteer for local soup kitchens (or other organizations!).
Another must-do for the break is attending the Trumbull Rotary Carnival. The Carnival boasts a wacky shack, Ferris wheel, swing ride, scrambler ride, multiple food vendors, and more. Each year, my friends and I get Plasko’s before walking down to Hillcrest and enjoying the rest of the night at the carnival. Simple plans like this are so much fun and create unforgettable memories.
While the spring days bring immense happiness and fun, it is crucial to stay on top of your schoolwork during this time. As a high schooler, education is your priority, and you must put your best foot forward in pursuing it. Study for tests ahead of time and do your homework as soon as you get home so that you can spend your free time enjoying activities of your choice. Overall, make the time to enjoy the season and all of the beautiful activities it brings!
