The Oxford English Dictionary defines journalism as “the work of collecting and writing news stories for publication in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, or online news sites”. Journalism is done through a variety of styles and utilizes multiple techniques so as to best convey the information presented.
Journalism dates back to Rome in 59 B.C.E., when politician Julius Caesar founded the Acta Diurna newspaper in order to share official events, public speeches, private notices, and gossip. Journalistic writing continued to evolve over the centuries, with the first in-print American newspaper, the Boston News-Letter, being published in 1704. Today, newspapers are primarily digital due to technology’s immediate accessibility.
Journalists use the inverted pyramid structure to organize information while writing. The pyramid cites that the most important information should be stated first, followed by details and background information. The idea is that, by presenting the most important information at the beginning, the reader is more likely to gain interest and read the entire article.
Newspaper articles must meet a certain English standard. When writing, be sure to describe all events and details in the active voice so that readers can quickly and accurately comprehend your words. Additionally, steer clear of weak words such as “stuff,” “very,” and “big.” Instead, opt for words like “items,” “extremely,” and “massive.” While improving your word choice, make sure that your article is still digestible. “If your work is so smart that only smart people can understand it, then it is not very smart” (Chris Rock).
It is the duty of every journalist to maintain truth, accuracy, and objectivity while writing. Newspapers should contain no biased information or generalized beliefs. A journalist’s job is simply to provide and put facts and events into context – it is up to the readers to make their own decisions. To do this, check that the entirety of your information is neutral and is derived from credible sources. Be sure to cite any quotes that you obtain and use so as to not plagiarize.

Journalism is a form of art. It is a medium through which writers can craft stories that raise awareness and evoke emotional resonance. Here at the Eagle’s Eye, we have long strived to capture a slice of student life through our writing. This year, we are introducing additional multimedia options. Contributors may submit videos, pictures, podcasts, and more about any topic or event that they are interested in. Stay on the lookout for our first meeting – coming soon – and remember to bring your ideas and creativity!
