Now that school has started and is in full swing, clubs are beginning to pick back up again. There are many different types of clubs for people of all different interests to join – ranging from the more academic clubs to service clubs to clubs that are just for fun. No matter the type, there are clubs here for everyone!
If you are more interested in academic clubs, then you might enjoy the Math Team! The Math Team is run by Mr. Seaman and Mrs. Capobianco every Wednesday from right after school, at 2:25, until 3:15. There are different levels of rounds students choose to practice: typically including basic arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry/Advanced topics and Coordinate Geometry/Discrete Math. Students in this club get to put their knowledge to use once every month, when they also participate and compete in school for the Fairfield County Math League, doing individual and team rounds until 4:00. If this seems interesting to you, the first practice starts on Wednesday, September 11th.
If you are more interested in service clubs, another great club to join would be the Interact Club with Mrs. Spalla. This club is affiliated with the Trumbull Rotary Club and students meet to help out our local community, and other communities around in need of help, including fundraising for Haiti last year. Sophomore Abbey Matera, a participant in this club, loves all the activities they do, and getting to help the community.
“The THS Interact Club has been such a great and kind community and offers many volunteer opportunities for those who need volunteer hours or simply want to help out their community,” according to Matera.
This is a great way to get community service hours as Mrs. Spalla posts many different opportunities, including helping in the Trumbull Rotary Carnival.
Students who are more interested in art and theater should consider joining Trumbull High’s TheSpians Theatre Club run by Mrs. Spillane and Mr. Bracksieck. Students joining this club have the chance to help with THS productions in many ways – from performing on the theater stage to being a part of the crew and helping behind the scenes. This club puts on two different productions each school year – a production in the fall and a musical in the spring.
At Trumbull High, there are many different language clubs, including the Spanish Club, French Club, Italian Club, and Latin Club. All these clubs focus on the culture of the language and the regions where they are commonly spoken. These clubs are a great way to try new foods, listen to music, and either learn more about the language you are taking or learn a little about a new one entirely.
Each club has slightly different activities, but in each of them you participate in fun activities and meet new people also interested in that language. You don’t have to be taking that specific language to join the club, so you can join any one or combination of them!
If you are more into athletics, you should consider trying out and potentially joining some of the winter or spring sports teams that will start up in a few months. Most winter sports will have tryout dates in December. Some of these sports include Basketball, Indoor Track, Boys Swim and Dive, and Ice Hockey.
Some of the THS spring sports are Tennis, Baseball, Lacrosse and Boys Volleyball. THS’ spring sports will mainly have tryouts in March. More information about these sports and their exact tryout dates will be on the Trumbull High School page under the athletics section once it gets closer.
If you liked the sound of any of these clubs, you should email the advisors to get in their Google Classrooms and try to make some of the meetings! If not, the THS Club Fair is taking place on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th during lunch waves, and you can see many more clubs and what they do there. You can also check the Trumbull High School page for a list of all the clubs and the teachers running them. Joining some of these clubs is a good way to meet new people with common interests and to try new things or challenge yourself so you can have the best high school experience possible.
