Have you attended a Trumbull High soccer game this fall yet? If you haven’t, you’ve been missing out on fast-paced matches, exciting rivalries, crazy goals, and an overall electric atmosphere. With both new and returning players, the teams have been working hard to build their momentum and make strong names for themselves.
Starting the season undefeated with 7 wins and 3 ties, it is clear that the girls soccer team has been working hard all offseason so that they can establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with at both the FCIAC and the state level.
Currently, the team is ranked 1st on the western side of the FCIAC conference, and tied for first overall. The team has recently taken down Saint Joes, winning by a score of 3 to 1, and breaking the Cadet’s three year streak of having no regular season losses.
Regarding the state and FCIAC tournaments, the team is in a good spot to have home field advantage for at least the first round of games, setting them up for a better chance of advancing to the later rounds. If the girls soccer team continues to accumulate more wins, they will be in a very good position for the post-season.
Having 12 seniors on the team this year has proved to be a big advantage, giving the team lots of leaders and experienced players. Specifically, captains Liv Fuimara, Mckenzie Vano, Taegan Bajda, and Hannah Felicione have pushed this team to the next level. Throughout the season, the team has scored over 30 goals, with senior strikers Alexandra Riehl and Michaela Diamond leading the charge.
Behind the scenes, Coach Rich Sutherland has pushed the girls to their highest potential, and the team’s managers Addie Reynolds and Claire Targowski have been working to keep the score books in order, and to keep the social media updated (@trumbullgsocc on Instagram!). Overall, the girls have proved that they are a tough competition for any team, and they are clearly looking for big results this season.
On the boys side, the team’s rocky start hasn’t stopped them from continuing to work hard and bring their all to every game and practice. This year, seniors Jaden Lima, Tommy Dicorpo, and Luca Solustri have stepped up as captains to lead the team.
With 22 upperclassmen, the team’s experience and overall leadership gives the Eagles an upper hand against younger teams. While they may not have many wins right now, the boy’s team has proved that they can stay in any game and can compete with many of the strong teams in the FCIAC.
They’ve scored 15 goals so far against a number of very strong opponents. The team is led by Coach Vitiello, who is also a history teacher at Trumbull high! On the sidelines, managers Kate DiGiovanni, Eliza Harry, and Sofia Zerella control the scorebook, the instagram page (@trumbullboyssoccer) and more.
Managers are a vital part of the background work of any team and these managers show that. Coming towards the post-season, the boys are looking to compete in the state tournament. Overall, they’ve worked hard to push through injuries and other setbacks throughout the season so far and are continuing to push themselves to get the results they want.
Despite both wins and losses, it’s obvious that the hard work done by these student-athletes is not to be overlooked, and that they have set big goals for themselves this season. Don’t miss out on any more of the Eagles’ home games on the cork field this season!
