Since their rise in popularity during the 1940s, comic superheroes have captured our hearts through epic adventures, heartbreaking backstories, and bombastic non-stop action! We’ve seen almost every type of iteration of these heroes from cartoonish comedies to realistic masterpieces. However, in the past 20 years, two heroes in particular have solidified themselves among the best that the Superhero Universe has to offer: Batman and Captain America.
Supported primarily by his iteration in the MCU, Captain America has gained massive popularity among fans due to the relatable performance of Christ Evans and his high quality portrayal in the Marvel movies. Batman, meanwhile, has primarily been popularized due to video games, comics, short films, and a mixed quality representation by Ben Affleck in the DCEU. Both are without a doubt staples of their respective universes with different strengths and peculiarities.
However, these talents beg the question, if their universes ever collided and they did face off, who would win? At first glance, you may think the victory goes to super powered Captain America rather than the merely human Batman. Well, I’m here to tell you that you’re WRONG.
Batman wouldn’t just beat Captain, he would neutralize him in almost any combat scenario you pit the two against each other. Because Batman is no mere human, he is a god fighting tactical genius pushed to the absolute physical and mental limits of human potential.
I’m going to go through a single major scenario in which the two face off and explain Batman’s critical advantage against the man in stripes. A random encounter between the two of them in a suburban neighborhood. To clarify the scenario, here are the established versions of the characters we’re going with. For Cap, we’re going with the classic MCU civil war version. Traditional costume and gear, superhuman strength and ability, along with his iconic vibranium shield. For Batman, we’re going with the Arkham Knight Batsuit V8.03 a highly advanced titanium mesh armor designed for maximum mobility and protection. He’s equipped with a classic Arkham loadout of batarangs, the batclaw, explosive gel, voice synthesizer, smoke pellets, remote electrical charge, and freeze blast…with the remote Batmobile control just in case.
The battlefield heavily favors Cap due to the lack of levels for Batman to use stealth, but that’s part of the challenge Batman overcomes. They encounter each other in a random skirmish in a suburban neighborhood and immediately begin to fight in hand to hand combat. Captain America has enhanced speed, strength, and stamina. However, Batman is a master of every known martial art and has the batsuit to help enhance his physical traits.
The match is originally locked in a stalemate, however, Batman realizes quickly that Cap’s superior stamina means that he can’t keep fighting a war of attrition. Simarily, the vibranium shield gives Cap a further edge and he knows it. With that in mind, Batman drops a smoke pellet followed by a magnesium flash bang that overloads Cap’s enhanced sight allowing the Bat to take an advantageous position away on top of a house.
His first priority is to disarm him of the shield and deny him direct confrontations. Noticing that Cap charges at close distance out of the gate, Batman pre-sets explosive gel in key places in an abandoned house. From there, he reveals himself and baits a charge towards him. As Cap charges, Batman triggers the explosive gel that knocks Cap off his feet and collapses part of the structure around him. Rogers is buried in brick and other materials as his shield lays flat on the ground.
Batman uses the batclaw to take the shield and stores it in a safe place. As Steve uses his strength to rise out of the rubble, Batman is once again out of sight and the shield, Steve’s greatest asset, is gone. From here is where things start to get one-sided. Batman uses the remote electrical charge in an attempt incapacitate but Cap gracefully dodges multiple charges as he clocks Batman’s position and uses his super athleticism to pursue.
As Batman retreats, he plants another few charges of explosive gel. Cap manages to barely get out of the way of a detonation, but as he dodges Batman glides down with a powerful glide kick into a technically perfect combo that knocks Cap backward. As Batman throws the second combo, Cap catches a punch and counter with a haymaker knocking Batman backwards into a car. He felt the impact, but the Batsuit helped protect his internal organs and ribs. As Batman retreats once again, he realizes he has to switch from martial arts to tactical neutralization.
Using the voice synthesizer, Batman mimics the voice of Peggy Carter to lure Steve over to a specific point. Steve knows it can’t be real, but he can’t help but be pulled in the direction. As he runs over, Batman uses his final charge of explosive gel to collapse a roof on top of him. As Cap tries to rise out, Batman puts him on ice again with specialized freeze grenades that temporarily enthawed Steve. In the precious 10 seconds that Captain is frozen, Batman finally triggers his ace in the hole: The batmobile remote control.
From far out, the afterburner of the Arkham batmobile roars as the tank-like car reaches 270 miles an hour. Steve tears out right before the impact, but it is too late. 3 tons of pure metal slams into the captain breaking the ice and sending him flying through multiple houses.
Cap, now having taken more damage than even he can endure, attempts one last “I can do this all day” final stand Unfortunately for him, Batman doesn’t even need gadgets to end the fight. He breaks down the severely hurt cap with another perfect combo finally sending him to the floor with a spinning kick to his forehead. The dark knight stands over the once radiant symbol of America now covered in cuts and blood. He is not dead, but he is beaten more badly than any man has beaten him before.
In a random encounter, this definitely is not a cakewalk for Batman. Steve’s enhanced skills and shield pose a major problem in a direct engagement. However, the second Batman creates space and adapts, Steve’s fight is already over. With prep time? Forget it this fight is even shorter. Even in a pure hand to hand combat without his gadgets and Cap without his shield, Bruce’s martial arts still give him a major chance of defeating Cap one on one. It would be the fight of his life no doubt but you can put nothing past the caped crusader.
Batman wins not because he inherently out-brawls Steve. He wins because his mobility, tactical improvisation, and gadgets make it impossible for even an enhanced human like Cap to keep up with him and predict his moves. Steve Rogers may be the peak of enhanced human potential, but Bruce Wayne is the peak of human potential PERIOD and a drugged up soldier with a shield is still no match for a human that fights gods on the regular and WINS. We may never see this confrontation come to the big screen, but you can bet all the money of the Wayne family fortune that this will not be the encounter in which the dark knight falls…
