Just when you thought it was over… Just when you thought all the pain and suffering of Tom Brady and the Patriots dynasty was over, it’s all happening again. As soon as one dynasty left, another immediately took over.
For two decades, football fans sat on their couches sick and tired of seeing the same New England Patriots win the super bowl again, and again, and again. Well guess what, the script writers have for you now? A brand new dynasty led by one Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Swifties (Chiefs).
As if the Tom Brady PTSD was not already bad enough, with the Chiefs 2nd straight Super Bowl ring on Sunday (and third in the past 4 years) they now have a shot at becoming the first team in NFL history to win three straight championships.
Now I know what you are thinking: HOW THE HECK DID THE NFL LET THIS HAPPEN!?!?
Barely even one year removed from Brady’s retirement and the NFL already has another dynasty on its hands. You see, people were rooting for the Chiefs when they first started on this immaculate run. People wanted to see the bright young talent in Patrick Mahomes succeed. However, every fan certainly got more than they bargained for.
Six years into his career and Mahomes already has six AFC Championship appearances, and 4 super bowl appearances. On top of that, Mahomes has collected 3 Super Bowl MVPs and has a shot to have the most ever if the Chiefs win again next year.
You want to know the worst part about all this? The devilish icing on top of this cake of annoyance and despair? The man is 28. Yes, you heard me right. Patrick Mahomes is somehow still only 28 years old. Not only does this mean he is still going to be ruining our lives for years to come, but it also makes him the most successful quarterback at his age in NFL history.
While Brady did have 3 super bowls at age 28, Mahomes already has the same amount of Super Bowl MVPs Brady had in 20 years and more MVPs than Brady had at that age. But in the wake of Mahomes utter destruction and dominance, fans can’t help but shake their heads and wonder: How is it possible? How is it possible that one player could be so completely dominant over the NFL even in his worst season?
It comes down to one simple factor: Talent. Even though he has not yet surpassed Brady in GOAT status, it is safe to say that Patrick Mahomes is easily the most talented quarterback in NFL history. He has a game that is perfectly molded for the playoffs and the integrity and drive to fight through the adversity he faces. His arm strength, his escapability, his clutchness, it is all of these things that make Mahomes who he is.
However, most importantly, by far Mahomes’ most incredible trait is his playmaking ability. Mahomes is able to make plays out of the pocket like nobody else ever has. It does not matter if you have 1,2,3, 4 D Lineman chasing him he is still going to make a perfect 30 yard pass down the field in the most critical of gametime.
On top of this, Mahomes playmaking is not a big play or turnover like someone like Josh Allen. He is smart, articulate, and rarely ever makes stupid decisions when it matters most. Good quarterbacks who lack this gene such as Tua Tagovailoa, Dak Prescott, and Trevor Lawrence have not obtained even a portion of the success that Mahomes has enjoyed. It is this gene that separates good QBs from great, winners from losers, hall-of-famers from pro bowlers.
If you want to win, your quarterback has to make plays when it matters most and absolutely nobody, NOBODY is better at that than Patrick Mahomes.
With all that being said, Mahomes is not invulnerable. After all, Brady only won seven Super Bowls in the 2 decades he was in the league. This means that over double the amount of Super Bowls Brady won were won by other teams. In my mind, there is one team out there that I think can shut down the Chiefs dynasty before it reaches its peak. One team with a quarterback that has even more drive, desire, and passion to win a Super Bowl than Patrick Mahomes. One team that can dethrone the Chiefs and save us from the eternal torment of having to watch Taylor Swift on the TV every five seconds: The Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen.
Allen is too talented and the Bills are too hungry to let themselves be pushed around by the Chiefs once again. I believe that next season, Buffalo will come back with a vengeance and shock the world by ending Kansas City’s bid for a three peat…only to lose in heartbreaking fashion against the 49ers in the super bowl.
Still, all of this is purely speculation. The reality is that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs might just be too good. If no one can stop them, they will keep winning, and winning, until every Chiefs matchup turns from a football game to a Taylor Swift concert. At the end of the day, Patrick Mahomes is inevitable, and all we can do is watch as we bear witness to the next Tom Brady.
