On the biggest stage in the world, when the lights are at their brightest, who will be left standing when the dust clears? Who will rise above the competition to separate themselves from the pack? Hearts will break, fans will scream, and there will be blood…Okay maybe not, but either way with the NBA playoffs upon us we have now entered a two month stretch of some of the best basketball any of us will see in our lifetimes.
The regular season may be fun, but the playoffs are a completely different game. Players are fighting tooth and nail every position; diving for loose balls, grasping for rebounds, desperately trying to box out the bigger guy. This, ladies and gentleman, is basketball at its finest.
Now with all that being said, it would not be the playoffs without a few predictions. As I am writing this, the Bulls and Heat along with the Kings and Pelicans are still yet to play. Aside from that, the rest of the matchups are set and let’s be honest: None of the teams I just mentioned are making it past the first round anyways.
First off on the chopping block we have one of the most intriguing matchups on the list: Clippers vs. Mavericks. It’s a shame that one of these two phenomenal teams is going to have to leave so early, but that’s just better for us fans because we get the action we were promised weeks before we were even expecting it!
Star power is abundant on both sides of this nitty gritty matchup. The Clippers possess a rotation of out-of-their-prime all time greats such as Paul George, Kawai Leonard, Russel Westbrook, and James Harden. Meanwhile on the other side of things the Mavs possess a generational superstar in Luka Doncic along with Mr. World B. Flat himself Kyrie Irving.
Now, comparing these rosters side by side, the Mavs are more likely than not the underdog. Their bench is not as deep and their frontcourt could have serious trouble slowing down the likes of Kawai and PG-13. On the other hand, the Mavericks have something that the Clippers do not and that is a mildly athletic European white man who might just happen to be good in basketball shorts.
Seeing James Harden thrive in Los Angeles has been a breath of fresh air, but I just can’t bet against the likes of Luka Magic in the playoffs and I have got Mavs in 7.
Next up we have an Eastern Conference matchup between the Cavs and the Magic.
If you had told someone at the end of last year that the Magic would find themselves not only as the 5th seed in the playoffs, but among the best defensive teams in the league you would have been laughed out of the room. Now standing here in the present moment, haters aren’t laughing at the Orlando Magic anymore.
Their former number 1 overall pick Palo Banchero has budded into a potential superstar, and the offensive and defensive contributions of guys like John Isaac or Franz Wagner have propelled the Magic into the position that they are in right now. With all of these things considered, I have no reason to bet against the Magic anymore and I think they beat the injured Cavs in a six game series.
Transferring back over to the Western Conference, we meet the lopsided matchup that is Nuggets vs. Lakers. Now some of you may believe the endless propaganda that the media is feeding you about the Lakers being title contenders is legit; I on the other hand am not so easily fooled.
LeBron James may still be LeBron James, but the Lakers scrawny roster can in no way stack up to the likes of the Joker and company. Are you seriously gonna stand here and tell me that Gabe Vincent is gonna lock up Jamal Murray? Or that AD is not going to fall back into his usual playoff slump of madness? I don’t think so.
Nuggets in five let’s move along please.
Looking at the final set matchup in the West we have the star-studded Suns vs. the surprise T-Wolves. I really hate saying this, but if I am being honest, I believe that the Suns are gonna fail. I see all this star power they have brought in, but so far It just has not worked and there is nothing that would indicate to me that it WILL work in the playoffs.
Minnesota has a far more well-rounded roster along with far superior chemistry with each other. Anthony Edwards is gonna show out no matter what, and as long as KAT and Rudy take care of their specialties, I think the Suns season ends in utter disappointment and Kevin Durant’s legacy is tarnished even more.
T-Wolves in 6.
Checking in on the final two matchups in the east we have Bucks vs. Pacers along with Knicks vs. Sixers.
The Pacers have without a doubt been one of the most fun teams to watch this season. However, I just can’t picture a guy like Giannis going down in the first round two years in a row. Doc Rivers may scare me, but I still think the Bucks will handle this series in six games.
Now, Knicks vs. The Sixers I think might be the most interesting matchup in this entire bracket. The Knicks, a surprising two seed may pose a lot of hope for a city that has not seen success in decades, but I think that they got the worst possible seven seed in the Sixers.
The primary reason for the Sixers being the seventh seed was the injury of Embiid. Now, with Embiid back for the foreseeable future, I just don’t think that Brunson alone can handle the force of the Sixers. Embiid has played better than ever this season, and as good as Isiah Hartenstein is, I still think that he will be absolute food for a hungry Embiid.
As much as it pains me to say it, I have the Sixers upsetting the Knicks in seven.
Now, I am going to address the two matchups that have not been set yet: Boston will play either the Heat or Bulls, and the Thunder will play either the Kings or Pelicans. Needless to say that both these powerhouses will move on to fight another day and I am not even going to bother predicting games like these.
With all these predictions set, it is now time to set sail in the magical land of sports that is the NBA playoffs, and when all is said is done, I am either going like a genius, or the biggest idiot in the world. Either way, nothing is going to stop me from enjoying what is the biggest stage in the world…
